Posting photos of nursing babies online

On another board, a poster has a long siggy that includes a slideshow of nursing babies from her playgroup. Another poster took offense at it and there has been quite the debate over the appropriateness of the siggy. I posted a message inviting people here to discuss that issue, and I hope that one of the posters from that particular playgroup comes here, at least so we can see what the siggy looks like. I'm having a hard time forming coherent thoughts today, LOL! So don't worry if I don't come back to debate the issue with you, I'm trying to get out of the office so I can go home & sleep.
As "Linda Richmond" (aka Mike Myers) from SNL would say, "talk amongst yourselves."

CL, Breast vs. Bottle Debate

Here's an interesting article on some of the non-listed ingredients in baby formula.
I would like to say a sincere thank you for that information that I am sure none of us have seen before . You know...some of us really don't have a choice on what we feed our babies. I have a rare GI disease and require up to 10 rx medications on a daily basis (some with contraindications to bfing)and all that rhetoric does is make moms that have or even choose to give their children formula feel bad. I support breast feeding as many formula feeding mommies do. Why can't breastfeeding moms do the same. Our children are being fed and loved and that is the bottom line. This really was irrelevant to the debate at hand and I am sorry for feeding into it, but so sick of hearing/reading this crap.

<< >>Corn syrup: Contains glucose. Mother's milk contains lactose as the main carbohydrate. Not all brands of formula contain lactose.<<
This sentence is what makes me think the entire article is bull. Lactose contains glucose. Glucose is good, not bad. Lactose is a disaccharide, half of which is glucose, the other half is galactose. It makes me wonder about the rest of the article... if a supposed pediatrician tried to pretend that glucose is a bad thing, how accurate is anything else she said? Wouldn't she have said the corn syrup contains *fructose*? >>
I've got to give you some credit for the creative thinking, but your explanation is off the mark.
Lactose is important.
>>Lactose helps with the intestinal absorption of calcium and iron. It helps promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut. And probably most importantly, it is a component of a lipid needed for brain development. Now, I don't know about the other sugars we put in formulas, other than lactose, but I think the jury is still out whether or not they do as good a job as lactose does. Lactose is important in brain development--I'd suggest keeping it in the diet if we can. <<

>>BTW, I still simply cannot understand your contention that formula isn't really harmful.<<
Ahh.. not my contention. My contention is that noone has proven to me that it is harmful. I haven't proven that it isn't harmful, either, but then again, I haven't said it isn't. I'd like definitive proof either way.
I've read many things about the "tactics" of formula companies. Being a student of business, most of what people call "insidious" is normal business practice, practiced by just about every company in the country. Marketing is not insidious just because you think they shouldn't be selling their product in the first place. If you really feel that way, push for legislation to make formula illegal. Marketing is marketing.
Breastmilk decreases/ formula increases at best could be a case of semantics. I still hold to the breastmilk decreases risk, because it IS the breastmilk that is decreasing the risk. If the converse is "everything else"... well, it makes it sort of obvious. It doesn't matter what the baseline is, it matters what is causing the difference.
Interested here... what are the actual statistics on the risks? From a reputable source, if possible.
If you are willing to be discreet, use a sling or cover, more power to you. If not, don't complain when you are asked to cover yourself and/or leave.
Oh, but I will!
You know...some of us really don't have a choice on what we feed our babies.
Donor milk...
Why can't breastfeeding moms do the same
Many do!
Umm, if you're going to take offense to information posted on a DEBATE board, why are you here? No one forced you into this thread. I don't see how that information is making you feel bad when it takes more effort to find the information than it does to ignore it. I'm sorry that breastfeeding did not work out for you, particularly if you wanted it to. But someone once posted information on the risks of formula feeding to me when I was considering weaning my DD at 3 months, and that information preserved the breastfeeding relationship for us.
So while it may insult you, it helped me. Don't you agree that we are equally entitled to information? Particularly when that information is posted on a site specifically designed for its dissemination?
