Posting photos of nursing babies online

On another board, a poster has a long siggy that includes a slideshow of nursing babies from her playgroup. Another poster took offense at it and there has been quite the debate over the appropriateness of the siggy. I posted a message inviting people here to discuss that issue, and I hope that one of the posters from that particular playgroup comes here, at least so we can see what the siggy looks like. I'm having a hard time forming coherent thoughts today, LOL! So don't worry if I don't come back to debate the issue with you, I'm trying to get out of the office so I can go home & sleep.

As "Linda Richmond" (aka Mike Myers) from SNL would say, "talk amongst yourselves."

There is no reason for an older child to be "neglected" because of the BF relationship between mom and younger sibling; an older child can hang out right next to them while they nurse, have stories read, watch a show together, help with simple tasks like fetching a burp cloth, etc.

This was actually a fear of mine, when Celia came along.

<<Of course, smoking in restaurants in my state was banned so long ago I don't remember any different. I must have been 4 or so. >>

WOW! That's pretty cool. I'm in Florida and it was just banned in the last 5 years. I'd just quit smoking when the issue was brought to vote. Horribly off-topic but it's great that our kids will grow up in a country that is no longer smoker-friendly.

With what assessment? That we aren't painting all FFers with the same brush? Find me a post that proves anyone IS, and I'll print out this thread and eat it. ;-)

Yes, I think that particular side debate should be dropped.

Virginia allows restaurants to choose. There was legislation up for approval recently that would have not allowed it is restaurants but it was defeated (perhaps because VA is a big tobacco state). Fortunately many restaurants are going smoke free anyway. I try to avoid those that do allow smoking. It doesn't matter how far you are from the smoking section, you can still smell the stuff and I just can't stand eating around smoke!

"If not bfing can (I know that this is an exception and not the rule) bring about a better parent/child relationship than wouldn't that trump the health benefits?

Since the parent's situation won't change the composition and nutritional value of breast milk, how about saying that the risk of harm from Mom, if she feels "forced" to breastfeed, outweigh the risk of harm from the formula? That is the *actual* risk/benefit evaluation being made.

Others have pointed out the scapegoating of parenting choices, so I won't belabour that point.

The "season" of infancy is such a short one in the grand scheme of things, that it's a poor family indeed that cannot be flexible enough to see to the needs of it's smallest, most vulnerable member.

***********disclaimer*************
The above statement is NOT about breastfeeding per se, it's about *ALL* the needs of an infant and how the adults choose to meet (or ignore in some very sad cases) those needs. It's about placing priority on infant NEEDS instead of adult WANTS.

The above statement is also NOT directed AT you kerilynn, your posts about your sister (?) and the ensuing discussion triggered the feelings expressed in it.
******* end disclaimer *****

I'll help Cambellover out and say it was probably my post she was referring to when she said someone said that FF choose formula out of ignorance. This is exactly what I meant, and I did say in my post that I considered myself just as ignorant of the risks of formula as any other new mom.

My statement wasn't a commentary on anyone's intelligence, fitness as a parent, capacity to care, etc., etc. It was my opinion, based on my experience, that most new moms (breastfeeders and formula feeders both) really don't have a good knowledge base when it comes to infant nutrition.
