Is this recall serious?

Some feel and the company is promoting that this recall is not serious at all. Just a few bug parts that might never have made it into the formula. Voluntary recall. No health risks.

So it's really nothing to worry about right? Well, other than the fact that mom cannot feed her baby now if she has recalled formula, until she goes to the store and buys more. If she can get to the store, and if they don't close before she got there. It's not like she can give baby something else till she can get to the store. Although some are...

"think I’m just going to make him a bottle with just rice cereal and some banana(baby food to give it a little more nutrients)…I don’t know what else to do….but i know i definitely don’t want to give him his formula, i still don’t know if it is on the recall list!"

"For the last month she has kept diarreaha and has been very fussy and gassy. I thought it was because she was cutting teeth but I think it was this bad formula. She will be 8 months old in a few days and I am going to go ahead and put her on whole milk. I think its 200 percent safer than formula."

This recall is massive - 5 million. Some stores only have the recalled formula on the shelves. Others have cleared the shelves, their liquid formula is sold out and there is no formula to buy. Some stores are not accepting the recalled items for refund, or mom didn't keep the receipt, so parents don't have enough money to buy more. And some are finding that the lists of what is recalled is changing.

"I bought the formula from Dillons but they are not accepting any returns yet as they are awaiting instructions from Abbott."

I've read reports of finding black bits in their formula and even bugs:

"I don’t know if the eggs were alive or if this is related but about 3 weeks ago I opened a can we “forgot” about from 2 weeks before and I found bugs in it. There was a good bit and I freaked out and threw it away. It had stayed closed so I couldn’t figure out how the bugs got in. Who knows if it is related….. I also have found chunks of dirt in another can a long time ago."

"Okay so a few weeks ago I found these litte tiny bugs on my counter. They were a brownish color. I got looking and I found them in the formula container. I thought they just found their way into the container so I started putting it in the fridge. Does anyone know what type of beetle or what they look like?"

And this is not just a recent problem that the company reported on immediately. This goes back at least three years, so even children who are no longer on formula may have been affected. Why did they take so long to do anything about this? Reminiscent of the China scandal.

"I also did my research on internet and the first cases of beetles added formula was found by a few customers more than one year ago (I read their posts that time and could locate those angry parents). If they did the recall that time, Abbott has to recall almost 80-90% of the contaminated products. But now, after one year’s consumption (most parents threw away their empty bottles or one-year old receipts), Abbott probably will only recall less than 30% of their total infected products! "

These parents are scared and shaken - and justifiably so.

Parents are reporting sickness, that ends when they stop using the recalled formula. Even several reports of salmonella. Coincidence? Perhaps. But I have been reading it over and over - all over the net.

"People keep saying it doesnt pose a health risk.. But i believe it does as my 10 week old was just released for the second time in three weeks from the hospital. The 2nd time she was there for five days. She was screaming in pain constantly and had diarrhea and vomitting, because of this she got sevearly dehydrated. My daughter was on IV fluid for 5 days and a heart monitor. She had high levels of patassium which causes cardiac arythmia! very serious. Both times she was admitted they couldnt get the IV into her tiny veins, so they had to inject fluid into her back muscle for a few hours until they eventually got a vein. This is a very painfull procedure. My poor baby now has a UTI from the diarrhea and is having her blood drawn everyday to check her patassium levels. I now have to give my baby antibiotics which are not good at this young age. This was the most traumatising thing i have ever been thru and cant imagine what it did to my baby girl. Please take your baby to the ER if they are showing any symptoms of a tummy bug!! If you change the formula you should she an improvement in a day or so."

"I recently switched my son back over to Enfamil about a week ago because the Smiliac was giving him diarhea and he was eating VERY little. I even brought him into to the ER because he was completely inconsolable, they told me he may be allergic to something in the formula. Turns out we had the recalled containers, I guess he was allergic to beetles! I am relieved he is feeling much better now that we switched formula. I am just wondering if this will affect his health in the long run."

"My son is now 6 months old and for about the last 4 months we have had nothing but stomach problems with him…. Doctor visit after doctor visit medicine after medicine…. Now I wonder has this been my sons problem all this time…. This is absurd.. I have used similac with all my children but he just seemed like somthing wasent sitting right late nights crying, screaming, spitting up, throwing up, doubling over out of the blue, painful screams for a couple mins ….. I will not use similac any more so no I do not want to trade in the two contaminated tubes sitting infront of me for another similac product I want a full refund regaurdless recipt or not compensation for doctor bills, medicine, gas it took to get there and pain and suffering would be nice"

"I really think my daughter got salmonella from this formula and hearing about this recall really makes me believe it. She was a mess for 2 months and had to go to the dr often, then see a gastro specialist too because her digestive system was a mess. This isnt something to mess around with it at…dont go thru what we had to go thru…take your baby in"

"My daughter ( 6 months old) became severely ill on Labor Day. She could not keep anything down and would scream at the site of her bottle. She usually consumed 28-30 ounces of Similac Isomil and a this point she had decreased her feedings to 5 ounces per day. We were in the emergency room twice due to dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhea. She had to receive IV fluids to keep her hydrated. The doctors kept blowing us off saying it was just a virus. Believe me, you know when there is something wrong with your child!!! She is finally back to eating again and the containers we currently have are on the recall list!!!!!"

"My baby was vomiting up all his formula about 4 weeks ago and actually ended up with a stay at the hospital. They couldn't figure out what it was but he was on this formula. The docs switched his formula and he hasn't gotten sick since... I still have the old formula and just checked and it HAS been recalled."

"Great…I get frmula from WIC. They require that you get only Similac-Now what do I do? I just gpt wic a week or 2 ago and my 4month old has been having diarreaha for the first time since she was born-she was formally on Parents choice(walmart) and did fine. I only switched because of wic:("

"HOW IS THERE NO HEALTH RISK???? my baby has been pooping blood and has diarrhea and i have recalled cans!!!"

"Our baby has been having stomach issues, tummy aches, very loose stools, spitting up, terrible gas since coming home 8 weeks ago? Many doctor visits. Taking meds to try make him feel better. And now I just checked all my formula and it is all on the recall. So I get my money back for containers contaminated who is going to reimburse me for all the doctor visits and days off from work to take him to the doctor. And seriously these are infants we are feeding beetles to and you are telling us it can cause upset stomachs and digestive problems but not a health issue. Now come on!!"

"my BFF is at Target right now and you can’t can’t return the formula. You have to fill out a form on similac’s website and they will mail you a label and then send you a check within 3-4 weeks! I am so mad! My baby has been pooping much more than normal and it’s green looking which is weird! She also has gotten a horrible diaper rash (she has never had before) and it gets worse when she poops.. it starts to get better when she only pees a few times but as soon as she poops it gets blood red.. "

"My daughter had the same thing and was diagnosed with Salmonella…please have your child checked as I am curious if she has it from the formula now too…I am going to be investigating this as my daughter went thru hell for over two months and this recall might be the answer I have been waiting for"

"We have had issues with my daughter for 7 months, and cannot find any reason why. In fact we just got back from the hospital so they could do biopsies on her stomach and esophagus. "

"My six month old son is having GI symptoms and not taking his feed for last 48 hours.. Just found out about this recall.. "

"For the last few weeks, my son has been having severe diarrhea. We took him to doctor after doctor and it was assumed he had developed a milk allergy. We switched to Similac Soy Isomil, and I found out via the website (after several tries) that BOTH containers of formula (both the advance, and the soy that we have) may possibly be contaminated. To know that my son MAY have been sick because his formula was contaminated sickens me. "

"A Similac rep told me that if your infant hasn’t been ill or sick then your batch probably isn’t contiminated."

Ugh...so sad. Parents don't need this extra hassle along with everything else they have to deal with.

Some stores only have the recalled formula on the shelves. Others have cleared the shelves, their liquid formula is sold out and there is no formula to buy.

I've never been in a store that only sold Similac and no other brands. I think that is really, really odd.

The only problem I can see is mothers who don't have any money to buy replacement formula. That is a problem but hopefully a temporary one, and it wouldn't affect all ff'ing moms because those with $$ and those on WIC can get replacement formula. So for those not on WIC and who are suffering financially, yes, that's a concern. All the health reports though, I imagine are from the health risks of formula in general. It's easy to assign health problems to the recall when there are surely babies on Enfamil and other brands experiencing those same symptoms. Live bugs in formula probably came from the home. If the can had been opened and not refrigerated is it recommended to be after opening, and there are bugs running around on the counter, I don't think that problem originated in the factory.

I actually tend to agree with you along with parents who are new to this or prone to panic (I have been both), everything seems dire. However, as you mentioned, kids do get sick while on formula and so I think some of that illness could just be average for a formula fed kid and I do not know about others, however, if my kid needs formula or the can I have I cannot use, I find a way to get more. I would not pay rent to have my kid eat, or a phone bill. However, there are always ways, and if one store does not have it, you try another, get a friend to go if you cannot or find some other way. However, do not give me sob stories because when it comes to feeding your kid, you have to be resourceful. That is part of being a parent.

(Btw, other then sicking to think about, eating bugs occurs in other countries without any illness. I have never partaken in the whole eating chocolate covered ants, however, I cannot imagine it is fatal. It might make one farty, but think of the protein...)

~~The only problem I can see is mothers who don't have any money to buy replacement formula.~~

The problem is not so simple for many of these moms.

~~The only problem I can see is mothers who don't have any money to buy replacement formula.~~

To the mom with no money and a hungry baby, it is serious! One mom was a student, who learned about the recall at 11PM, had to study for an exam in the morning, would be at school all day and had no car to get into town to buy more formula. For her it is serious, her baby needs to eat now.

~~The only problem I can see is mothers who don't have any money to buy replacement formula.~~

What if the mom on WIC doesn't have the bus fare to get to the WIC office? What if she has to bundle up several other children, perhaps taking them out of school because she wouldn't be back in time for them? What if she can't get the time off work to go?

Some moms buy up formula by the case - and now they have a dozen cans they cannot use and no money to buy more. That was a huge investment. It was Emily, I think, who said she bought up all of her formula before her baby was even born. What would she do now, if she found all of it was recalled. She is not poor, but that would be a huge financial burden to replace.

~~ All the health reports though, I imagine are from the health risks of formula in general.~~

The risks of formula are bleeding, gastro illness, multiple hospitalizations - all the things that the parents have posted worrying about? Seriously? Wouldn't there be more information out that if that was the case?

~~ If the can had been opened and not refrigerated is it recommended to be after opening,~~

The first can had not yet been opened prior to finding the bugs.

Even if you don't think their concerns are real - that is were these parents are and what they are worried about. It is serious and frightening to them.

I wonder how many of these quotes and stories would have been made public if there had not been a recall? It seems all the problems and similac infant has now will be blamed on the recall.

I just hope the company starts giving exchanges or money back soon. If I hear anything at work i will inform you all, but so far they are keeping retailers in the dark.

I think it serious since the company is going to be taking a huge hit by making this revelation. I fed my DD Similac and personally I wouldn't have been greatly disturbed by the bug parts as some mothers with more delicate babies would be.
