A thought on the free formula issue

I know I have heard "preciousboys" mention many times that she has written "FF" on all the papers and she said she doesn't get these free samples.

Well, I think it's pretty clear why! It's because the formula companies don't want to give YOU formula coupons when they know you are going to pay for it. They're going to give it to the woman that writes "BF" on her forms because if they give her free formula, they have a chance of her choosing to FF and using their product.

There is no mistake as to why the BF'ers get the free samples!!!

Good point. That honestly makes a lot of sense. And, it makes sense that I am STILL receiving all the coupons.

That may be part of it, but I filled out BF exclusively & only got 1 can of powder from Enfamil. (BTW, I filled out the info for the 3 biggies, too) I was thinking maybe it had more to do with the area people live in. Maybe the companies flood parents w/ samples if they live in an area where that particular brand doesn't sell well, or vice versa. There really doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason.

I gotta say no to this one. I filled in FF everywhere since I knew that's what I would be doing. I received 2 cans of Enfamil in the mail, 1 can of Similac, well over $30 in Good Start coupons (which I gave to a friend), a few in Similac coups, and loads of Enfamil ones. I also got extra free samples from the hosptial since mine was the resident "miracle baby," and my ped gave me a couple free samples as well. Come to think of it, I think I even got a small can in an Enfamil diaper bag at my post-partum OB appointment as well - but they knew my situation and that I was FFing.

"I was thinking maybe it had more to do with the area people live in."

This makes a lot of sense to me. I'm sure the companies look at demographics to determine bf v. ff rates in a particular area, and then respond appropriately. They would know how much formula is sold in a particular region, as compared to similar-sized regions elsewhere. I honestly do not know the bf v. ff rate in my part of the country, but I DO know that my state has the very highest rate of teen pgs in the nation (Yaaay, we're number 1!! LOL!) and that statistically, teen and very young mothers tend to ff than bf.

Based on that alone, I would speculate that the ff rate around here is pretty high, but again, I'm not basing that on anything other than conjecture. (We do have two LLL groups for my city, the state's 2nd largest metropolitan area.) But it would make sense that if a lot of formula is sold around here, the companies would be competing for my business.

I ended up with 4 grocery sacks of free formula, NOT including all the coupons I received for free cans as well!

Gee your right. Giving FFers free samples would be like "preaching to the choir".

I think you are exactly right.

With my first, I remember filling out one form in particular where I noted that I planned to bf, but was open to ff if bf didn't work. Within three weeks, I had received an entire case of ready to use pop-top cans of similac in the mail. And we got similac coupons for a very long time thereafter. We also got a large can of similac powder and a large can of some soy-based powder two weeks before my due date, with a letter in the box about breastfeeding is wonderful, but if working, many moms find it less stressful to supplement with formula during the day.

With my next two, I didn't subscribe to anything or fill out any forms, so all I got was thew hospital's complimenatry tacky plastic diaper bags. They gave me the special bf bag. It had a pack of J&J nurisng pads and two cans of similac. (one regular, one soy)

An acquaintence of mine who delviered in the same hospital and ffs didn't get any free formula. (I gave her my soy can, as that is the kind of formula she used).

I also noticed how all the L&D staff had pens and clipboards that say similac or enfamil on them. Coincidence? I think not.

No....not in my case. I filled in FF and got tons of Freebies. Starting with the Dr., then the hospital, to a case each of Enfamil and Similac at home, to free formula from the hospital. I still get free formula every time I go to the pediatrician. And I still get coupons in the mail too.

Are you so insistent on ignoring information I've repeatedly provided about this??? It's so exasperating!!! Specifically the fact that nearly all of the mothers on my Oct02 moms board here on PS - BF or FF - got the SAME EXACT SAMPLES AND COUPONS. And I know this for a FACT because some of the mailings were sent on to me by some nice BFing moms who couldn't use them.

Why must so many people here conveniently IGNORE me when I explain this?! Sigh. I guess it just doesn't fit into the whole conspiracy theory some of you are so desperate to believe in!

you know - to me, it would make more sense that ff moms would get more samples because they ARE going to be buying formula and samples may sway them to choose a certain brand over another brand.

i dunno maybe it is the us but i never heard of anyone here getting a whole case of formula whether they bf or ff. no one gets free samples from our hospital (although they will supply formula during your pp hospital stay if you request it)... the only samples i got were by emailing the company we use and saying "we use your product" then they sent us a can of powdered, some bottles and coupons for a bunch of formula. on that note though my bf friends never recieved samples either.
