http://www.thenational.ae/uae/health/fnc-committee-adds-breastfeeding-clause-to-uaes-child-rights-law

"Every child has the right to be breast fed," Agreed!

"This is the right of every child for two years" Great!

"Abandoned and orphaned children should also be covered, .... this could be accomplished using wet nurses." Cool.

"Breast feeding is not just giving a child milk" True!

"To enable working mothers to breast feed, the law will require Government entities to have a nursery on their premises." Sweet!

Working mothers are entitled to an hour off which can be used to breastfeed. Yeah!

Then is all goes wrong.....

"intent of the law was that breast feeding should be a duty, not an option, for all able mothers." Huh?!

If "it came to light that mothers were neglecting their duties, they could be subject to punishment." WTF?

That's not going to go over well. And it shouldn't. As much as I'd like everyone to breastfeed and sing kumbaya, this world just doesn't work that way!

I firmly believe that people have the right to make poor decisions. If someone chooses not to breastfeed because any one of the prevaling myths, I support her right to do so.

I think this guy does a great job of explaining where the line should be drawn: http://www.internationalbreastfeedingjournal.com/content/1/1/27

Children have the right to be breastfed, in the sense that no one may interfere with their mothers' right to breastfeed them.

[IOW] "No woman should be prevented from breastfeeding."

Requiring mothers to breastfeed or else is just plain wrong.
