"Hmm...maybe it is just the US that is killing everyone...."
ROFLMAO!!!!!!! Too funny :P
>>>>Who is assuming? That was a question.<<<<<
My statement in post 347: "Medication I had to take, that was not safe and does transfer into bmilk where there was no alternative medication." Her question in post 353: "Did your physician and/or you consult Hale?"
Assumption: That I don't know that the primary *way* doctors and LCs determine if a medication is tested, safe, unsafe, or not known to be safe or unsafe is by consulting Hale.
She asked the question, but I've been asked that a lot. And it does assume I don't know what I'm talking about, as further evidenced by the rest of her post: "2 weeks ago, I hurt my back. My family doctor tried to tell me that I couldn't take vicodin nor could I take an anti-inflammatory. Wrong on both accounts, based on Hale."
>>>> The purpose of the question was to get an answer from you, so that an assumption wouldn't be necessary<<<<
Why does she need to know the details? I'm talking about something that happened in the past, any new information wouldn't change my personal circumstances, even if I had been uninformed. The pertinent information to the debate was that breastmilk was unsafe due to medication that passes into the breastmilk where no alternative medication was available, therefore formula became a better option in that personal case (considering that donor milk from a milk bank was not an option either).

"How you state the "facts" impacts how others perceive the choices, actions and behaviors related to using formula. One isn't necessarily wrong, they are both factually correct, it depends on what kind of reaction you are looking for, or what you are hoping to accomplish."
Precisely.
Actually, IME, I have NEVER had a doctor who even knew who Thomas Hale was, let alone had a copy of his guide available in the office for reference. This includes my OB/GYN's (two different practices on opposite sides of the US), pediatricians we have used (again, in two different parts of the US), the nursing/LC staff in the hospital where I had my son, and also a dentist I once asked about it when I needed an injected anesthetic.
Every one of these professionals went by their Physician's Desk Reference, which goes by FDA labeling info, and told me one of several things: either I shouldn't nurse at all, or I should pump and dump, or I should wait til the meds were out of my system, etc. In the case of initiation of BF with my first child, this could have been disastrous, as they told me I needed my ped's "permission" to BF my son because I was on magnesium sulfate, so they made me wait until he was 6 hours old before I could even try to put him to the breast. I didn't know about Hale at the time, but I wish I did because he shows it not to be contraindicated in BF mothers.
If you have encountered doctors who actually know about and consult Hale's research, I think you're very fortunate!
I know you are feeling protective of Lee, but she asked a point-blank, sincere question. I'm trying to get her *factual* information in response to her question.
I know that an infant's gut is permeable for the first six months and that anything but breast milk causes "issues", whether noticeable or not, but have lost the details.
Mostly because I'm past baby-bearing age so it's less useful to me personally AND it's harder to trick the mature brain into thinking ALL the trivia is important enough to hold onto. ^_^
Sort of like those stupid ads for HFCS. Just because some people cannot remember the details of the problems with HFCS does NOT mean they don't exist!
You can disregard my post that says the same thing as magpiemamma's...PBRA again (Posting Before Reading Ahead). ;-)

I got my copy of the relevant pages of Hale from someone I contacted at the LLL, but I knew already from my midwife, friend LC and rheumatologist, as well as my own googling efforts that this drug was not even remotely safe for nursing mothers.
Another assumption is I just asked the doctor and went with what he said. I did not.

LOL! You nailed it. I hate those ads...

Sorry, but I assumed nothing. I am sincerely happy to hear that doctors are using Hale in some places, because they certainly aren't doing it everywhere!
