Ok, we need to get back to debating - so I typed "formula is evil" into Google & found most were saying,

>>>So, it is NOT an irrelevant question to ask whether someone's doctor, or that someone herself, has consulted Hale, because more often than not, the answer is NO. <<<<

Yes I get it. So few people are accurately informed that when I say I knew something everyone is going to question it, thinking I probably was not informed either. If you assumed I knew, you (general you) wouldn't ask. But since it's a safe assumption people don't know, they ask. Guess there is no way around that. I just have to make the disclaimer "yes really we consulted Hale" when I mention medication issues.

Interestingly enough, most studies were funded by formula companies - and yet BFing still came out on top. Imagine that!

"If a test can prove that someone was FF vs BF, then it sounds like the dangers of formula are definite and not just an increase in risks. If I saw evidence to say my baby's gut would have some issue if I formula fed then I definitely wouldn't. What happens to the gut of formula fed babies?"

Correct. Best in that situation due to the medication safety issues. Not best overall or in general (I bf'd as long as I could for all my children). ETA: I even bf'd when doing so was "questionable" due to medication issues, I only stopped when it was definitely unsafe.

"I think my reasoning was that it would be awful since they had no control, odd because you can't prove it, and unnecessary because the increased risk might not translate into a problem health condition. So I think I agree with her too."

I agree with the first two reasons.

Sorry, I am getting lost in this thread - keep losing my place and trying to respond - I don't know how you all keep up! LOL I am not getting any work done today!

Anyhow, here is one article that explains it a bit:

Just One Bottle?

Formula feedings prevents optimal development of intestinal micro flora in the breastfed infant. Those infants who are fed formula have a different gut flora that those who are breastfed.

Breastfed babies have a lower gut pH that is dominated by bifidobacteria with reduced pathogenic microbes such as E Coli, bacteroides, clostridia and streptococci.

Flora with diet-dependant pattern is present from the 4th day of life, with breastmilk-fed guts showing a 47% Bifidobacterium and formula fed 15%.

Enterococci prevail in formula-fed infants. Babies fed formula have a high gut pH with a variety of putrefactive bacterial species.

When formula supplements are given to breastfed babies during the first seven days of life, the production of a strongly acidic environment is delayed and they develop gut flora like artificially fed infants.

Relatively small amounts of formula supplementation of breastfed infants (one supplement per 24 hours) will result in shifts from a breastfed to a formula-fed gut flora pattern which bifidobacteriaare no longer dominant and the development of obligate anaerobic bacterial populations occurs.

After initial colonization, gut flora remains remarkably constant throughout life. Infants also have a functionally immature and immunonaive gut at birth.

Tight junctions of the GI mucosa take many weeks to mature and close the gut to whole proteins and pathogens.

Intestinal permeability decreases faster in breastfed babies than in formula-fed infants. Open junctions and immaturity may play a role in the acquisition of diarrhea diseases, and allergies.

sIgA from colostrums and breastmilk coats the gut, passively providing immunity during the time of reduced neonatal gut immune function.

It is clear that there is a risk to using just one bottle during the first week following delivery without medical indication.
