EXCELLENT point. Moreover, if you drank during your pgcy and your child was born with issues...you would never know if that was due to the drinking or not really, whereas if you didn't drink, you do know at the very least, that it was not due to drinking.
And *he* would know...how? that pushing hurts big time? That's like..."does squeezing your balls hurt?". And me saying "oh yeah, big time". *eyeroll*.
Heresay.
That's all it is for him. And FWIW yes there *are* women who feel no pain, and some who feel pleasure while giving birth. Maybe not many, but some. Who was he to assume you wouldn't be one of those? ;-)
I've had gallbladder attacks and they're no fun really, and labour was worse IME but OMG the absolutely *worst* pain I ever had was during my colonoscopy... :-(
Interestingly, I'm the opposite...I am fine with needles of all kinds, and give blood regularly. But epidurals freak me out still. I used to say it was the idea of someone playing around with my back...until I started chiropractic care. I guess I have no more "excuse" for why they freak me out anymore! Unless it's just that they seem completely unnatural to me. I am scared of the spinal headache you hear of, I know that.
Yeah but what are they supposed to sweeten it with, aspartame? I'm sick, personally, of all the *artificial* sweeteners out there. And honey, not before a year. ;-)

I don't think it's accurate to say you would *never* know. There are visible and measurable signs of the effects of prenatal alcohol use or abuse. You *might* never know, if your child had very mild effects and was never properly evaluated.

Oh, thank you. Someone got my analogy. I was beginning to think I wasn't making sense, or that you guys wanted me to join the Invisible Posters Club. Not that I would have a problem with that, those ladies are pretty great...If I could only find them!!!! LOL

Weren't you knocked out? Or did you not want to be??? I had one last year and they put me under. It scared teh heck out of me, but really the *prep* was worse than the actual procedure! But I can imagine that if I was awake that wouldn't be the case!!!
Going back to your original analogy - I think the problem is we know alcohol causes definite, lasting and damaging problems in the brain. The more alcohol the worse the problems likely will be. From my knowledge, there is a direct link between the two.
There is not the same direct link with formula. There might be when you think of an allergy to formula, but with most (all?) other risks the affects are indirect and could be influenced by other factors (bottles vs. breast, pressure on the inner ear from bottles, closely monitoring how much is offered or eaten, physical closeness that comes with nursing). It seems to me the correlation between alcohol and physical or developmental problems is much higher than with formula and diseases or illness.

I remember my brother doing that... ;-)
But I'm sure he'd be mortified if he read this. ;-)
