Fingernail Almost Causes Mom's Death During Childbirth

I know that title is misleading, but that's the headline I'm seeing everywhere.  It's a lot more dramatic than saying this mother experienced an amniotic embolism during childbirth.

At some point, amniotic fluid surrounding her twins leaked into her blood system causing her lungs to collapse.  She almost bled to death, but survived after undergoing 22 transfusions using a tube so she could breathe.

According to the article, this is rare (1 in 10,000 pregnancies), but extremely dangerous with over 80% not surviving.

I'm impressed that the hospital staff were able to act quickly and treat this.  Since it's so rare, it makes me wonder if most hospitals would know what to do if they saw it.
