The California ban initiative back in the news

This is from today's New York Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/us/05circumcision.html

What I found interesting were a couple of quotes on two issues that procircumcision supporters, until now, have not only always avoided, but that would even be caught dead admitting:

'.....“People are shocked that it has reached this level because there has never been this kind of a direct assault on a Jewish practice here,” said Marc Stern, associate general counsel for the American Jewish Committee, an advocacy group. “This is something that American Jews have always taken for granted — that something that was so contested elsewhere but here, we’re safe and we’re secure.....'[my bold];

and

"...Dr. David Baron, a family physician, certified mohel — someone who performs ritual circumcision — and former chief of staff at Santa Monica-U.C.L.A., said that he would not press any parent to circumcise a son but that he viewed the effort to ban the procedure as “ridiculous and dishonest.”. “To say it is mutilation is wrong from the get-go,” Dr. Baron said. “It is a perfectly valid decision to say that it is not what you want for your child. Any doctor who says it is needed is not being honest [my bold]

mu·ti·late
   [myoot-l-eyt] Show IPA
–verb (used with object), -lat·ed, -lat·ing.
1.
to injure, disfigure, or make imperfect by removing or irreparably damaging parts: Vandals mutilated the painting.
2.
to deprive (a person or animal) of a limb or other essential part.

I love how that one guy tries to make it an assault on a "Jewish" practice, playing the antisemitism card. It's not just a Jewish practice, it's also a Muslim practice, and an American cultural practice. If any ADULT Jewish male wants to get circumcised, then no one will stand in their way. Hell, they can chop their whole penis off for all I care, that would probably be a benefit to society actually, but they should not be allowed to force their mutilating religious ritual on a physically and intellectually defenseless child. There is no such thing as a Jewish, or Muslim, or Christian child, so no one's religious freedom is being infringed upon. Adults can practice their religious rituals on themselves until they're blue in the face, but once they try to force it on their children, that's when society should step in and protect kids from their parents like they do in so many other situations. Children are not property, nor are they props for your religious expression.

Yes, before the ink on the article was even dry, they were screaming "anti-semitism."

I was just reading about this, too. I didn't realize that a similar measure had been raised in Santa Monica only to be shut down already: http://www.ivillage.com/should-circumcision-be-banned/6-a-356090?ice=iv:mb:msg:js

Yes, it is disappointing that religious pressure trumped reason once again, but the San Francisco initiative is still on track. Nevertheless, be prepared for more screams of 'anti-semitism' and 'loss of freedoms' as the date approaches and the pressure intensifies. The status quo will not take this initiative sitting down and cannot, from its view point, allow the success of such a case of 'successful defiance'.

On a more cheerful note, one major celebrity has jumped into the fray head on. For those of you that can read Spanish, this appeared today in El País, of Spain,

http://www.elpais.com/articulo/gente/tv/Russell/Crowe/arremete/circuncision/elpepugen/20110610elpepuage_7/Tes

and you can get similar coverage in English in this link (although being from the Hollywood establishment, this publication could not refrain itself from adding "insults Jews' when, as you can read, that was not the case):

Federico.

It's unfortunate that Jena Troutman ended her initiative early.

Frank,

This is the NY Times report on the withdrawal:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/08/us/08circumcise.html

Interestingly, Jena Troutman clearly states that "The religious opposition really rose up, and I never intended it to be about that at all.

In the UK, as almost everywhere, it's the political obstacle of established religious tradition which is currently insurmountable. It would take a public uprising equivalent to the General Strike in 1926 to have even minor

"I cannot see circumcision being banned until Judaism itself questions the issue in sufficient numbers"

Jews are only 1.75% of the US population.
