The worst part was after - the baby WAS properly numbed before the procedure. However, this numbing quickly wore off and the baby could not be consoled for a very long time. It was heartbreaking :(
I agree with this initiative, and talked about it while I was there. I did not assist in any way, and asked questions throughout. One of the nurses who was there was very pro-intact, and agreed with me entirely. The others were suprised that anyone would even question the social custom of circumcision. I live in a state where it is still very widespread.
As a nursing student, I know I could have simply not gone into the procedure room and watched at all. However, I believe that I was able to educate not only student nurses but also RN's and assistive personelle by watching, asking questions ( to which I knew the answer), and then later that day continuing to answer questions.
I'm fairly certain one of the nursing students who was there is now anti-circ as a result of seeing this procedure, and of the discussions that followed.
One thing I learned while I was there - my kid's ped perform's circ's there ! :( That makes me very sad.
