Very good article, Tony! Here is another opinion piece from CNN, that talks a bit more about the ban interfering with parents' right to make decisions for their child: http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/06/15/etzioni.circumcision/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Just came across this in the Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/on-faith/post/much-ado-about-circumcision-a-pediatric-urologists-view/2011/06/10/AGlF8eOH_blog.html

It is one of the fairest, most well reasoned comments I've read on this issue from a man who should know!

It would seem that the intactivists overplayed their argument by focusing on the Jewish tradition of circumcising all male babies at eight days. Their campaign took a very ugly anti-semitic twist with the appearance of a 'Superman' type comic called 'Foreskin Man' who takes on the Jewish rabbis and môhels (ritual circumcisers). His mission is rescuing babies and saving their foreskins from the clutches of these community operators who are portrayed as very dark and sinister characters. True Horror Comic stuff.

Unsurprisingly the more level headed of the anti circumcision campaigners (including the lady promoting the bill) saw how evil and racist this angle was and chose to distance themselves from it. Hence it was withdrawn. It wouldn't surprise me if some other crazy, intolerant, fanatic took up the bill and lent their name from it.

I've no quibble with people who are opposed to circumcision and have had friendly exchanges on this board with those who are prepared to respect my views as I do theirs, ie agreeing to differ. If they don't want to circumcise their boys that's fine - but please don't try legislate to prevent me from having my sons done. They may deny
