15 & Up For Plan B

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government on Tuesday lowered to 15 the age at which girls can buy the morning-after pill without a prescription and said the emergency contraception no longer has to be kept behind pharmacy counters.

The decision by the Food and Drug Administration is an attempt to find middle ground just days before a court-imposed deadline to lift all age restrictions on the drug.

Today, Plan B One-Step is sold behind pharmacy counters, and buyers must prove they're 17 or older to buy it without a prescription. Tuesday's decision lowers the age limit to 15 — and will allow the pill to sit on drugstore shelves next to condoms and spermicides or other women's health products. But customers must prove their age at the cash register.

Teva Women's Health, which makes Plan B, said it would begin over-the-counter sales in a few months.

FDA: Morning after pill OK for ages 15 and up- http://news.yahoo.com/fda-morning-pill-ok-ages-15-232957915.html

How do you feel about this decision? Should Plan B be available for purchase on the shelf, to people aged 15 and older?

I'm all for it.  It's long overdue.  Plan B should have been on the shelves long ago.  This prevents implantation of the egg, so it jibes with my religion.  I'm in favor of easy steps like this so as to avoid abortions.  I'm not in favor of abortion.  It's is archaic and backward that abortions are still being done in 2013.

15 year-old girls do not have sex.  If any 15 year-old girl "has" sex, it is statutory rape in every state.  It's rape.  She should certainly have easy access to Plan B, since most rapes go unreported.  And she's not at fault.  And as a taxpayer, I don't want to pay for a 15 year-old to have a baby.

That's pretty harsh.   Are you saying that liberals don't have any morals?  If I'm not mistaken, it's the conservatives that try to stop any type of sex eduation from happening at schools, instead pushing an abstinence agenda.  IMHO, that's pretty brainless.

Teens are going to have sex, girls get drunk at parties and are raped, are raped, or gosh forbid, enjoy having sex!  Sometimes (quite frequently actually) they just make stupid choices.  We need to teach them morals and safe sex practices, but they are still teens.  They need our support, not condemnation for having sex.  If these teens felt they could be open with their parents, than we wouldn't have to have a law saying they could get it OTC.  Their parents would still love them regardless, and not hold them up to impossible standards.

It's about time, although I still think the 15 age restriction is not that helpful.  How many 15 year olds have access to the identification they are asking for, which would most likely be their birth certificate?   I hope that they will give instruction in high school health classes on the side effects and appropriate use of the pill, although the kids can access the info on the internet.  Everyone makes stupid choices, or the unthinkable (rape) can happen, and these girls shouldn't have to pay for it the rest of their life.

I am completely appalled that any 15 year old girl can walk right in and pick up something like this off the shelf. How does this encourage girls to be responsible or practice safe sex or good moral behavior? And I guess we are supposed to thank a bunch of brainless liberal morons for this garbage.
