Leggings Are a Distraction?

A high school principal in Minnetonka, Minn., has declared leggings a distraction and discouraged girls from wearing them at school. Dave Adney sent an email to parents last weekrequesting that students at Minnetonka High School “keep things covered up.” He says the girls used to wear longer shirts, but the shirts have gotten shorter, and this is a problem.

Carolyn Miller has seen worse. As a middle school English teacher in Rogers, Ark., she finds low-cut tops and lower-cut jeans revealing rear cleavage or “whale tail” much more distracting.

“I think leggings and jeggings are perfectly acceptable if worn in a way that covers the student's rear end,” she says.

Leggings as pants: "Cover your butts," one principal tells girls

What do you think?  Would you allow your child to wear leggings/jeggings to school?  Do you think they are inappropriate attire for school or is this much ado about nothing?

I think leggings are a wonderful idea for shorter skirts and dresses. However, I do think the rear end needs to be covered by the skirt or dress. Hemlines are awfully short these days and I will not allow my daughter to wear anything that does not cover her rear adequately with or without leggings.

I don't have girls, so maybe I don't see what the big deal is, but this just seems like much-ado about nothing.  In the article it has a picture of Pippa Middleton and she looks great wearing leggings.  I don't see how that would be inappropriate at all.  I guess it comes down to tacky or not for me... I could see them being worn in a very tacky manner, but I don't see how that is ban-worthy?  Maybe I'm missing something...

I think it is more the girls that wear them as pants, that could be a distraction. Both of my kids are in high school and my dd says a lot of girls wear them as pants that shouldn't. My son on the other hand loves them. lol
