Looming Government Shutdown

A look at which services will and will not be affected if Congress fails to reach an agreement averting a government shutdown at midnight.

A government shutdown would have far-reaching consequences for some but minimal impact on others.

Mail would be delivered. Social Security and Medicare benefits would continue to flow. Deliveries would continue as usual because the U.S. Postal Service receives no tax dollars for day-to-day operations; it relies on income from stamps and other postal fees to keep running.

But vacationers would be turned away from national parks and Smithsonian museums. Low-to-moderate-income borrowers and first-time homebuyers seeking government-backed mortgages could face delays.

What are your thoughts on the looming government shutdown? If it happens, will you be affected?

I won't be affected, but I think the Republicans should fund Obamacare.  It will be an unmitigated disaster and will cause people real pain, both literal and financial. Unfortunately, for the large number of low-information voters, it will take real pain for them to be able to see beyond the lies and rhetoric and give the Republicans control of the House, Senate and White House in the upcoming elections.
