Mall of America Policy on Black Friday

Do you drop your kids off at the mall for a little post Turkey Day shopping or take them with you but let them go off on their own to browse the holiday sales?

If you shop at the Mall of America, the nation’s largest mall, you won’t be able to do that this year during peak holiday shopping times if your children are 15 or younger.

The policy, which requires kids under 16 to be accompanied by someone 21 or older on Fridays and Saturdays after 4 p.m., will be in effect during mall hours on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and from the day after Christmas until New Year’s Eve. The mall has had the weekend policy since 1996.

Some say this rule isn't fair to the many teens who don't cause a problem.  What do you think? Is this a reasonable policy for Black Friday?

I went to a mall last year to shop during the holidays for the first time in years. My older daughter (16) rarely "hangs out" at the mall and my younger one(13) does ask to go about 1-2 times a month. So I have very little experience with this. However, shopping in a mall is not a "right". Fairness has nothing to do with it. If the mall wants to set this rule, I have no problems with it.

Were guards standing by the doors.. How do you patrol that? I wouldn't mind enforcing rules like that everywhere as there's nothing more annoying than trying to get around crowds of kids that just "hang out" at malls. That said, I've been to that mall once when our kids were small, I swear that was like a city in itself! We used the daycare while DH and I shopped and for as big as it is, It was very customer friendly and safe....

Anyone who sets foot in a mall between Thanksgiving and Christmas is just going to have to put up with a little crazy.
