Manti Te'o Girlfriend Hoax
Fri, 01-18-2013 - 10:42am

On Wednesday, Te'o and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the player was drawn into a virtual romance with a woman who used the phony name Lennay Kekua, and was fooled into believing she died of leukemia in September. They said his only contact with the woman was via the Internet and telephone.

Te'o also lost his grandmother — for real — the same day his girlfriend supposedly died, and his role in leading Notre Dame to its best season in decades endeared him to fans and put him at the center of college football's biggest feel-good story of the year.|main5|dl5|sec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D258697

I really don't know what to make of this story but it has been all over the radio and news where I live.  Anyone have an opinion on this? Do you think Te'o was involved with this from the beginning?

I think he was just a young man, caught up today in the "dating scene" of his age group, and fell for what he perceived to be his perfect girlfriend.

It is sad but in this day and age of dating online first, it seems this type of thing happens often, no matter the age group. Unless you meet the person in real, you don't really know "who" you are talking/emailing/texting with.

Sad for him to have gone through something like this.

I don't know what to believe about this story, it's pretty fishy. I find it hard to accept that it went on for so long and he didn't get suspicious, who in this day and age doesn't do at least a Skype chat? I did hear that the person behind the hoax has pulled it on other "friends" of his, he is seriously warped regardless.

I gotta say I'm pretty happy stories like this are coming out b/c it opens the eyes to kids growing up in this internet savy era, I've always been skeptical of online relationships/friendships/dating but I know I can't shield these virtual sites completely and kids all over are signing in to them. This is the dark side and it just adds to what we should talk to our kids about, Safety is first and foremost.

Edited to add, There's a cable show "catfish" my kid watches.  I have no clue what it's about but she's described it to me, It's ridiculous the traps people set for themselves.

For some reason I can't help but think he is involved. I know this has been happening more often, but isn't it odd that such a story would come out as he was a candidate for the Heisman? I mean, what a story, right? Just seems a little odd to me... but maybe I'm missing some of the facts?

I think he made the whole thing up, but had some help. What is most likely is that he is gay, and people were starting to wonder why he never responded to the women throwing themselves at him, so he made up a girlfriend. When his buddies got suspicious, he had to, um, bump off the girlfriend. I really think the whole thing spiraled out of control and that he never intended this level of publicity.

The issue is that there are NO out gay NFL players--this is one area where being openly gay is the kiss of death--and Te'o wants to play post-college, so he and his team are doing royal damage control right now. If this scenario is true, it's very sad.
