Modesty Covers on Magazines
Mon, 07-29-2013 - 12:07pm

One of Britain's largest magazine retailers has ordered magazines with overt sexual imagery to cover up their front covers with "modesty bags" or risk being withdrawn from sale.

So-called "lads' mags" - publications marketed primarily to men - such as Zoo, FHM, Nuts and Loaded have been a staple on supermarket shelves for years and have become synonymous with the sexual content and glamour model photos displayed on their front covers.

Supermarket chain the Co-operative gave an ultimatum to publishers on Monday, telling them to deliver the magazines in pre-sealed bags designed to obscure the front cover.

If they do not comply by September 9 then the Co-operative has threatened to cease selling the magazine at the 4,000-plus stores it currently operates.

Modesty please! Cover up those magazine covers... -

I've seen something similar on Glamour and Cosmo magazines at my local market.  What do you think about them?  Necessary or not?

I don't think I've seen a modesty cover on a magazine, but a lot of the supermarkets where I shop have "family friendly" checkout lines with no magazines or candy. And my daughter regularly flips the magazines over when she sees a cover that offends her. This works for us!

What if we all just agree to keep porn off the covers of magazines and save the bags.

Wouldn't that be nice? :)  But it's not just obvious porn that's a problem, it's trashy magazines like Cosmo and celebrity gossip rags. Until the world changes and we all become less sinful, I'll just applaud my daughter's magazine flipping campaign and use the family friendly checkout lane so I don't have to look at garbage!

I agree with the poster that says just keep the porn off the cover to begin with!
