Technology Hurting Parenting?

Model and mom Peaches Geldof was out walking her 5-month-old son in a stroller, talking on her cell phone, when the stroller hit a bump -- then took a tumble. A photographer captured the whole debacle. Luckily, baby was just fine. But it's something to give pause to every mom who has ever talked or texted on a phone while parenting (so, every mom).

Technology -parenting fail: Has it happened to you?

Do you think that we, as parents, are too distracted by technology these days?  Is technology hurting our parenting?

Yes, accidents happen, and this most likely wouldn't have drawn anyone's attention if she hadn't had her cell phone in hand the whole time.  However, I think we, as a *society,* are too distracted by technology.  It's not unusual to see a couple out to eat and both of them are glued to their phones the whole time they're waiting for their food, never looking at each other, much less speaking.  A few weeks ago such a couple had a 3 or 4 year old child across the booth from them, begging for mommy and daddy's attention while the parents couldn't be bothered to put the darned phones down.

Some groups of young people seem to have no conversational skills - they text rather than talk, and they have no idea how tone of voice can be super off-putting when they actually talk to people.  Some think it's perfectly acceptable to interrupt a conversation with the person in front of them to answer the buzzing device in their pocket.

What in the world did we do before cell phones?  I think relationships in general suffer when people are too attached to the devices in their pockets.

I hit a bump and my infant son tumbled out of his stroller too. No cell phone involved. Accidents happen.
