From a biological perspective, this is an excellent post! Thanks! You sound like my DH, who is a veterinarian.

I agree that using emotions in politics is a dangerous and risky business, but let's consider the whole Sarah Palin thing - we know little about her, really. As Americans, with her on the ballot as a VP pick, we need to know about her character. Her character is reflected in the precedence of her legislation, and what she stands for. The environment is a huge issue. The Alaskan environment affects all of us. We don't live in a bubble ecologically where we can say, "Well, that's in Alaska so it doesn't affect me." That's like saying, "My foot is gangrenous, but it doesn't affect my heart." The environment worldwide affects all of us. Palin's horrendous environmental record in Alaska thus needs to be examined. The environment is a hot issue, whether people like to think it is or not. So 2 things come to mind with this for me -

1. Her environmental record ("abysmal" in the words of a NON-PARTISAN biologist IN ALASKA)!

2. Her character. Anyone advocating for this barbaric practice (aerial gunning of wolves), demonstrates something about their character. She is all about protecting unborn babies, which I admit is admirable and I have no qualms with that. But if you're truly pro-life, then you're pro-life in all areas. You can't pick and choose (even though human life is unarguably the most important). Palin's legislation to allow this barbaric practice shows me that she is not truly pro-life, but it also demonstrates something even more scary - it shows a hardness of heart and a ruthlessness and lack of compassion that I believe we as the American people have a right to know about before voting her into office.

Being a mom of 5 kids, and a dog owner, I just cannot imagine how she could ever have passed such a sickening law.

I'm personally surprised to hear that any funds were used to defeat prop. 2, as I never saw a single add to vote no. All I saw was TONS to vote yes (voting yes would have closed the loop hole for aerial hunting by the dept. of fish and game). The mining prop. 4, however, I saw tons of adds for each side. My town, North Pole, is about 15 miles outside of Fairbanks, the second largest city, so that's where we get our tv coverage, if that makes a difference.

i think it is funny that Palin is defended on this issue because killing the wolves protects the caribou.

it seems like the BIGGER threats to caribou are drilling for oil in alaska (which Palin supports) and global warming (but according to Palin the jury is still out on whether humans have any role in that matter)

I am amazed at the outrage over killing wolves, but killing babies is just fine.
