This could get interesting. I wonder how long it will take, before Rove is called a RHINO? The GOP seems to be eating their own.

Although I did hear someone refer to the GOP as the Donner Party. It was humorous. I actually agree with you.

But they aren't running as a third party. They are running as Republicans. Seems to me they are trying to change the GOP, whether you call that "eating their own" or pushing out the "ol same ol". Whether they succeed in doing that and whether that proves to be a lasting change, once they are actually in the position where they have to govern, remains to be seen. Regardless it's not creating a new party, but changing an existing party.

Am I the only one who sees similarities to what is going on in the Republican party with what happened with the Whig party?

I plead ignorance, but please elaborate.

They are GOP. That is why they're running on the Republican party ticket. They're just the most far right of the party.

Sure. In a nutshell, the Whig Party fractured mostly over slavery, with some against it and some for it. The ones against it created the Republican Party (Abraham Lincoln was a Whig, then became a Republican). The Whig Party eventually couldn't hold it together and the pro-slavery folks in the south joined the Democratic Party.

I can completely see the Republican party fracturing with those "RINOs" creating a new party.

They would probably be quite successful in siphoning some of the right side of the Democratic Party. Do you foresee there then being three parties, or would one of them quickly fade?

I, too, could see a new party of moderates forming, taking some Democrats with them. Who knows? I might be interested in such a party. I think that whatever would be left of the Republican party would end up being about a meaningful as any of the other third parties we currently have.

Are you sure that's not just wishful thinking? ;)

I'd love for someone on the right to weigh in.
