One issue I am pretty fervent about is the second amendment rights.

So you think making it mandatory is a good idea?

If everyone had even the minimal training prior to purchasing and using a gun, I can't imagine how much safer the ownership of one would be.

We own 3 guns. FIL is bringing his vintage 22 bolt-action rifle he learned to shoot with as a kid.

Mine is a Glock 9mm semi-automatic, plan to get my conceal carry permit, won't carry.

DH's is a Bersa full size 9mm double action, plans to get his conceal carry permit & carry to and from work. He keeps the weapon in his car when he goes to work.

Our home defense shotgun is a Mossberg 510.

They are all loaded and kept in a fingerprint lock box beside the bed.

We have soon-to-be 7 children, and we feel better knowing that we are able to defend our home and family in the event of a break-in. We live in the country and in the midwest--it's very much commonplace for families to keep home defense shotguns and huntin is very popular as well. Almost every man we know hunts, and most own a dozen or more guns. People spend thousands of dollars on gun safes, and create decorative built-ins around them. It seems to be a cultural aspect of this area (whether local area or middle America in general) that we didn't know about when we lived on the East Coast. There is no permit or registration requirement in our state; it was NCIS report, cash & carry to purchase our weapons. We both plan to get conceal carry permits because we have a right to, and we feel strongly that we ought to exercise our rights available to us.

It also weighs in that DH's ex (SD's mom, she lives here and doesn't speak to or see her mom or anyone on that side of the family) has a 20 year old son from a prior relationship who has threatened in an IM that he will come out here and kill us all. He's a convicted violent felon and has a long juvenile record of violent crimes, and is currently the subject of a protective order for domestic violence against his dad (NOT my DH, thankfully). The FBI knows about the threat, but doesn't see it as imminently dangerous because he is 850 miles away. However, because we know his mom has a plane ticket that SD refuses to use to visit, he actually has a way out here if he is serious--and the mom wouldn't stop him, but would most likely encourage him if he told her what he wanted to do. No joke. Therefore, we are taking no chances.

However, even without the weirdness from the ex and her convict son, I enjoy shooting and we live in a subdivision where we can shoot on our property. I believe that we as Americans ought to exercise all available rights, just as we vote because that is our voice. The more gun owners there are, the less likely the government is to strip us of our gun rights.

Just the way I see it.

Senator Barack Obama's Contempt for Your 2nd Amendment Rights

The right to bear arms is a fundamental right provided by the Constitution as a means for Americans to protect themselves, their families, and their property. Senator Barack Obama has sought to diminish and even remove the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens and has gone so far to say that he does not believe people should own guns. The right to own a firearm is exceedingly important to the citizens of this nation, especially to the significant number of sportsmen who enjoy the outdoors. Senator Obama's record on the Second Amendment is extreme and simply does not resonate with the American people.

BARACK OBAMA DISMISSES GUN OWNERS

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

- Senator Barack Obama (April 6, 2008)

THE OBA MA FILE

  • Running for the Illinois State Senate in 1996, Senator Obama supported banning "the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns." Senator Obama also supported waiting periods and background checks to purchase all firearms.

  • In 2001, Senator Obama voted against a bill to allow individuals to carry a concealed weapon when they have a valid order of protection out against another person.

  • In 2003, Senator Obama voted in support of legislation that "would have banned most of the privately held hunting shotguns, target rifles, and black powder rifles" in Illinois. He also voted in support of a measure that would have prohibited multiple sales of handguns within a 30-day period.

  • In 2004, Senator Obama voted against legislation "drafted to protect homeowners from being prosecuted in cases where they used a firearm to halt a home invasion."

  • In 2004, Senator Obama expressed his opposition to right to carry concealed weapons by saying, "I mean, I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry."

  • Running for the U.S. Senate in 2004, Senator Obama received an "F" rating from the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund. Senator Obama advocated national legislation banning concealed carry.

  • In a 2004 candidate questionnaire, Senator Obama supported banning assault weapons.
