according to this article - Obama did start with the Keating 5 thing .. this past May, well before Palin's remarks.

So perhaps it's not retaliation at all and what I've been saying the whole thread ... what they do and have always done?

I don't know if you would call these smears, I call them lies. Here are just a few:

Obama has said that McCain wants the war in Iraq to last 100 years.

The truth:
...at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, a crowd member asked McCain about a Bush statement that troops could stay in Iraq for 50 years.

"Maybe 100," McCain replied. We’ve been in South Korea … we’ve been in Japan for 60 years. We’ve been in South Korea 50 years or so. That would be fine with me...As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, it's fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al Qaeda is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day."

THANK YOU very much for responding! I was beginning to become frustrated by the lack of responses I have been getting to this and other questions I have asked. Anyway, you raise an interesting point. Has McCain (in your opinion) lied about Obama?

When they use words "out of touch" and "erratic", many people believe this is agism.

Without spending much time thinking about it the one ad that comes to mind is the one about the sex ed for kindergarteners. While I don't think that was a lie I think it was a bit of a stretch and unnecessary. It wouldn't have any bearing on which way I vote.

Oh and one more, I think there was an ad saying Obama meant the lipstick on a pig remark as a jab at Palin. While I really don't know if he meant it that way or not, I kind of doubt he meant it as a Palin jab. The one thing that did make me wonder was the way he was rubbing his head and trying to remember the line. But again, not a vote swaying moment and not necessary to make it into an ad.

I've never been someone who believes every piece of gossip I hear.

Well, the lipstick on a pig thing Obama obviously actually said but what his intent was in making that comment is unclear. I think there's a difference between that and pulling a few words out of a sentence and completely changing the meaning of it. Like I said I don't think he meant it as a jab but it's not outside the realm of possibilities.

The Sex ed thing, technically what McCain said about the bill was true. The bill was intended to bring "age appropriate" sex ed into the kindergarten classroom. The bill did not define exactly what would be age appropriate, that was up to the interpretation of the teacher. So what McCain's ad said was true but that didn't mean I thought it was an appropriate ad.

I guess I see these examples of McCain's as being technically true but irrelevant to the election. The Obama ads that I mentioned were just outright intentionally untrue. IMO

The debate is starting so I'll make this quick.

It's been my pleasure to "talk" to you.

I'm willing to meet you almost halfway and say that both have probably said things they shouldn't have. I have to admit I can't see how anybody could look at the things Obama has said and not see the lies. :) I would imagine you feel the same way about McCain.

Well, no harm in agreeing to disagree about how truthful our respective candidates have been. The debate's on, can't wait to see how wonderful McCain will do and how horrible Obama will do. ;)
