Just based on my experience in the medical field, at least in the practices I deal with, there have only been a handful of hypochondriacs out of the hundred to thousands of people who go through those offices.
<"she doesn't understand the contradiction between being Catholic (which doesn't support abortion) and supporting Obama who does support a womans ability to have an abortion.">
And as a Catholic, I'll be happy to explain. I am very much against abortion. That is because I am pro-life. But as I said in my earlier post, I do not LIMIT that to just abortion. Abortion is one huge issue for me. But when I take all the other pro-life issues, abortion is about the only one that the Republicans are good on, in my humble opinion.
Here is the way I see it -
One of Jesus's biggest messages was to help the poor. No conditions. He often said to give everything to them and to follow him. He didn't say to only give to them if they work, have insurance, etc. I feel the Democrats are better on this than the Republicans.
I am against capital punishment. I have heard the argument that those on death row are not "innocent," but how do we know? Maybe they were wrongly convicted. Maybe they asked God's forgiveness in the moment before they died, making them innocent. The Catholic Church speaks out strongly against the death penalty as a pro-life issue, and the Democrats have a far better track record on this than the Republicans.
I am against the war in Iraq, as was Pope Jon Paul II and our current pope. Obama wants to end the war and voted against it. It is my deep feeling that an Iraqi child's life is just as important and precious to God as an aborted baby's life.
I am very much of an environmental advocate. I consider this a pro-life issue because if the planet goes down, we all die. I also see God's precious beautiful life everywhere on this amazing planet. To me, we desecrate God's creation when we trash the planet, or refuse to do something about global warming. The Democrats have a far better track record of environmental activism than the Republicans.
I believe health care is a right. So does the US Conference of Catholic bishops. They specifically call it a "right." So if you're following the church to a T, you have to agree with them! 18,000 people die in this country every year for lack of health insurance. That, to me, is a pro-life issue as well. And I side with Obama on that one!
I am for gun control. I am constantly amazed and confused how Christians can be so into gun rights and claim to really know who Christ is. I can't put the two together in my mind. This is the same Jesus who forgave those people who were nailing him to the cross and they think he is happy about us carrying around assault rifles? Makes no sense to me. Enough said.
Jesus was born to an unwed teenage mother, and was an illegal immigrant himself into Egypt as a baby. He met us in our lowliest state as human beings. To me, the Democratic platform is better on immigration and the poor.
John McCain supports embryonic stem cell research. In the eyes of the Catholic Church, this is the same as a first term abortion. It is the destruction of human life. So if you are not going to vote due to the abortion issue, you really have to exclude both candidates!
I also feel that by increasing social programs, and helping those less fortunate, and through responsible sex education, we decrease the amount of abortions in this nation. It's not like Roe vs. Wade is going to be overturned under a McCain administration anyway.
There are many pro-life issues, and while I disagree with the Republican platform on abortion, the other issues stack up on the side of the Democrats. Without a doubt.
I hope I have addressed the ISSUES here without any attack. I am very well versed in Catholic doctrine and theology, and am happy to explain my Catholic POV and conscience in regards to my (and other Catholics) support of Barrack Obama. I really feel it is unfair (and yes, judgemental) to accuse me of not being a good Catholic in voting for Obama. I could say the same for those Catholics voting for McCain (based on what I wrote here), but that is between them and God. Thanks for reading this far.

I am not accusing anyone of anything they didn't say. I apologize if I came off that way. I am just explaining my Catholic position as to why I am voting for Obama. I just posted that to clear up any confusion as to how someone who is Catholic can vote for a pro-choice candidate. I am not even sure who Patty is! Forgive me there.
I think I'm a bit sensitive to the criticism of Catholics from *some* (and I emphasize SOME) Republicans. I've been told on these boards that I am not a true Catholic. I've also been told I'm a "Cafeteria Catholic" - that I pick and choose the issues. Which actually isn't true since I am against abortion. So perhaps I overstepped my bounds with my post in defending my position, but far be it for me to attack Patty or anyone else.....at least until I take the log out of my own eye. ;-)
"i didnt feel any love coing from patty, i felt disappointment and disgust."
I had decided I would no longer take part in this discussion because it seems pointless.
Patty....
