For years, Americans have had their phone calls about credit card bills and broken cell phones handled by people in the Philippines or India. But American firms are starting to bring call centers back to the U.S., however, this time around, companies are hiring more people to work in their own homes.

Ten years ago, it made a lot of sense to outsource these jobs overseas. But that's changing. Increasingly, companies that want to outsource their customer service jobs are happy with these domestic arrangements.

High inflation and double-digit annual raises in some sectors are pushing up the cost of labor in India. At the same time wages in the U.S. are falling and companies are re-thinking the tradeoffs associated with outsourcing.

That's a great trend! My SIL has worked for 4 years for Johns Hopkins Health Plan as a customer service rep. handling billing problems. She can quite literally sit in her jammies all day and put in a full day's work. She puts in one 8-hour shift at their headquarters every 30 days, so she does get the reminder of what that 90 minute commute feels like, but for the most part, she's on her own, at home. I'd like to do something like that myself. Then, I'd save who-knows-how-much on my wardrobe and commute, while still bringing in some income.

Such a better option. I get sick of talking to "Bob" who clearly knows very little english and cannot help

My last name is Irish, they all seem to be named Patrick when I call.

But to be fair, even the call center workers with a command of the English language are very ineffective when off script, but they are still better than an automated voice response system.

Hate automated systems. All you get is the run around, drives me nuts.

This is good news! My sister has been checking into work at home options, maybe she'll land something like this.

It's completely fair. Why would you bring a company back to the United States just to hire people that cannot speak properly.

Canada has an English test for immigration! What many do not know there are many dialects of English. And those with British have a problem understanding US English add a native tongue and there is such a mess!
