How do you feel about Obama's call to service challenge in reagrds to people donating time to charities and civic works? Will you participate? Do you think it is a good idea? Will it benefit the country as whole?

Personally...I am going to start looking into local charities and organizations when our car issues are resolved. I can't do much in the way of money, but I can give my time. I think this country needs more volunteers, especially considering that this ecnomic crisis will more likely get worse before it gets better..and there are so many who are worse off than I am. A helping hand up....can do much more than a cold hand out. Just my opinion of course.

i like it! i'm biased though, i have been volunteering since high school... it's how i ended up working in the nonprofit sector. but honestly, i feel like most people who try volunteering enjoy it, jmo. i'm actually pretty bummed out, for the past 7 yrs i've volunteered on MLK day but this yr i actually have to work :(

i usually check sites like voluteermatch and craigslist to find volunteer gigs, i'm also thinking of doing monthly donations to the SPCA.

i do think it will benefit the country as a whole... as long as those who are doing the volunteering arent expecting appreciation in return. while "thank you" may seem like a simple phrase to utter, it doesnt always happen, so one shouldnt be discouaged by lack of appreciation.

Maybe he's talking about people that don't volunteer?

I can't tell you how many charities I've supported who say they need checks, not bodies. The ones that do accept volunteers usually are super strict about when you can commit you time, and rigid about min hours per week. It's like they are structured around court ordered community service rather than rotating in volunteers for one Saturday every month.

I would love for someone to put a list together of organizations that took volunteers and what kind of commitments they required. Hmmm...maybe I can volunteer to put that together. ;)
