Thought I'd ask your thoughts on stiffer law or penalties for marriage and divorce? I can't remember what forum, but didn't GWB talk about making marriage harder to dive into because the divorce rate is what it is?...Your thoughts?

egd

p.s. I think of this as I battle the challenges adn demons in my own marriage. Dh and I have three beautiful children together. Dam*, the cost of divorce adn the trouble of breaking the family unit just eats me alive!

Forget the financial costs.

Why bother with stiffer laws (I'm assuming you mean making it harder to get married), people are living/sleeping together before they get married anyway. Would people really care?

Gosh, that sense of condoning really says alot doesn't it. Do I want my children growing up knowing that if stiff, tougher marriage laws were in place, they could just shack up instead?!

LOL - IMO, it doesn't matter what you want. If the laws are stiffer & they want to be together, they will. Heck, even with the way the laws are now, plenty of people live together!

But that POV doesn't make it right. I guess I could have rephrased my question to read: If there was legislation out there that regulated/required tough sanctions in order to marry, would you favor it?

No, I wouldn't. Tougher sanctions on divorce, maybe. As I see it, people who don't want to marry won't - but those who DO should take it seriously.

I'm thinking if people know going IN that it'll be tougher to end it, maybe they'd consider not marrying at all, or trying harder to "make it work" once they're in. And divorce rates would go down.

In AL, all you need there to get divorced is a month's wait and $200. I hear AZ has self-service divorce centers. Michigan, 60 day wait...heck, you can even get divorced online!

At the moment, there's not much of a deterrent to divorce - easier to split than work out differences, kwim?

I love the idea of stiffer laws!

While I wish people were better prepared for marriage and I feel that often times divorce is a first option and not a last ... I do not support creating laws to make getting married harder.

My point was that people already ignore getting married and live together out of wedlock. Make it harder and probably more people will do the same. I certainly don't condone it.
