I have no words.
My husband was a Marine for 3 years, although before we met. I've always had such respect for the flag. I can't even understand the mindset of the people who want to trample on it.
I'm pretty good at devil's advocate, but I don't see another side here.
Well...if you had wanted to play devil's advocate, Fred Phelps, if you can imagine him with some horns, a pointy tail, and a trident, would be a most difficult devil for whom to advocate.
Ah yes ... very true!
I would think it is a simple freedom of speech issue. As far as I remember, flag-burning has been ruled as falling under freedom of speech more than once. This would presumably be the same.
That said, I find Phelps just baffling, or rather I am utterly baffled that he has actual followers. His "theory" is not even extremist, it is completely ridiculous and obviously both hurtful and offensive in general and to people in the armed forces in particular. I will never be able to understand why people get so anxiety-ridden about what other people do in their bedrooms.
I don't know that he has followers so much as family....and unfortunately for us, he has a very large family.
The only "other side" is free speech.
I cannot understand anyone who hates America so much would want to continue to live in this country. I wonder why they do?
You mean the flag tramplers? They don't hate America...they hate Americans.
