Colbert testifies to Congress

All I can say is, What was he thinking? Did he think he was making a point with his comedic tone? Has he gotten to the point where he is taking himself to seriously and he too thinks his show is actually news?

"FOX News: The host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" stayed in character during testimony as he made light of his experience working for one day as a migrant laborer on a vegetable farm in New York. (Full testimony at link on video)

"America's farms are presently far too dependent on immigrant labor to pick our fruits and vegetables," he said. "Now the obvious answer is for all of us to stop eating fruits and vegetables and if you look at the recent obesity statistics, you'll see that many Americans have already started." While some audience members laughed, most the members of the House Judiciary subcommittee barely cracked a smile. "This is America," Colbert continued. "I don't want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American, then sliced by a Guatemalan and served by a Venezuelan in a spa where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian." "

I'm honestly curious, why?

I really don't understand what he was trying to do, even when he began to sound more serious at the end he then went back to his
'act'. I couldn't tell if he is was really trying to make a point or just be satirical, and actually a bit rude.

As a disclaimer, I do watch Colbert now and then and enjoy him. I think he and Stewart are great satirists.

I personally didn't care for it.

If he had gone in seriously he could have brought light to the issue with his celeb status.

It was brilliant...especially the part when his character ended and his straight forward answer made the point.

The celebrity factor, plus his brilliant way of conveying the "attitudes" we have heard/seen over the years were the point. He was trying to get attention to encourage change in our visa laws. I think he got the attention, and I suspect (though they'd never say it) that by putting on his Colbert-character, he may have caused ever so brief of an "aha!" moment. Some of the rhetoric we've been hearing against migrant farm workers isn't related to reality.

according to the video she is judy chu, a representative from california. this video clip is the first time i've heard of her.

i would say definitely not. in my experience, most people here have no idea what is going on in the political arena of our country, or even their own city.

<<(ie. did inviting him there for publicity for the issue work)?>>

well, i guess it depends on how you define "work" regarding this issue. unfortunately, i think, alot of people feel the way the OP feels about the situation. those of us who enjoyed his testimony, we probably agree with what colbert was saying, anyway.

i'm not sure if that answers your questions, i'm very tired and may need to revisit this tomorrow to make sure it makes sense, lol
