Yes, this is from a right leaning source, however there are many, many great links included in the article.

BTW, I'm going out of town for a few days, but I'll try to respond to any posts when I get back.

I find it ironic that it is fairly easy to find people on the left who think Obama is too moderate. I think Obama is a classic democrat but I also think he is a pragmatist rather than an idealogue.

And I totally agree with you on no longer knowing who McCain is or what he stands for. He was a fundamentally different candidate in 2000 - one I liked a lot. He has reversed himself on several key positions I thought were right in 2000. I also wish he'd gotten the nomination then but given his current platform, choice of Palin, allergy to talking about issues, etc, he seems like a different man entirely. I am now convinced that he may not have been a great president but I think he would have been far better than Bush.

McCain did show poor judgment in the S&L crisis and that is relevant to the current situation. I find it particularly worrisome given that Phil Gramm was the architect of the deregulation bill in the late 90s that has been connected to the current situation and he has been a key adviser to McCain on these issues (I think you mentioned this in another post actually). It is appropriate to consider his role but only in light of more recent actions IMO. I just don't want the election to become a tit for tat of sensational claims.

I would like someone to ask McCain the Qs you put forward: What did he learn from the Savings and Loan scandal? What would he do differently? What should the country do differently? I don't think he knows the answer or at least I have seen no sign that he does.

For balance, here is the Obama campaign's story on the Keating Five:

To me.....it's one thing to know a domestic terrorist..it's another thing entirely to support them through legislation.

– Voting against making anti-choice violence a federal crime. As the Jed Report notes, McCain voted in 1993 and 1994 against making “bombings, arson and blockades at abortion clinics, and shootings and threats of violence against doctors and nurses who perform abortions” federal crimes.

– Opposing Colorado’s “Bubble Law.” McCain said he opposed Colorado’s “Bubble Law,” which prohibited abortion protesters from getting within 8 feet of women entering clinics . The law was later upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Voting to allow those fined for violence at clinics to avoid penalties by declaring bankruptcy. NARAL Pro-Chioce America notes that McCain “voted to allow perpetrators of violence or harassment at reproductive-health clinics to avoid paying the fines assessed against them for their illegal acts by declaring bankruptcy.”
