I'm a fan of John Denver (rest his soul) and always loved "Take Me Home, Country Roads."

It's funny....the state road that my rural road runs into was just "repaved" with gravel and tar over the top of it.
We were kinda stunned. It's a major through way between my town and the town down the way. I'm sure my road will be converted to gravel if this trend continues.
I don't really know how I feel about it. Looks wise it's awful..gravel flying everywhere and Soooo dusty. But I do understand it's cheaper. Though...gravel has to be redone more than pavement due to displacement and so on. So I don't know in the long run if it really saves as much as they think, or if this is just a temporary fix until the state/county starts getting more revenue.

My DH used to drive on some back roads when his pharmaceutical sales territory extended to western Maryland/parts of Virginia/West Virginia. Wow...the stone chips just ruined the paint job on his company cars. He used to hate it, but he'd use the roads since they were a more direct route than the paved county roads, and if he did it right, he could cover more territory faster. He stopped doing it, however, when he had some car trouble and had to wait several hours for the road service truck to come tow him in to a mechanic. If he'd been on a well-traveled, paved road, he's sure that he'd have been rescued fairly quickly.

People can't go flying down a gravel road as easy as they can on asphalt. I've seen people spin-out on gravel. Ending up in a ditch.
