What he said was neither a gender nor homophobic slight though. Telling another man to suck his **** does not make fun of gender or sexual orientation. Heck if anything he opened himself up to having gay jokes made at him by asking another man to do that.
>>In this particular instance, wasn't he asked not to say things like that? It doesn't matter who asked him, man or woman, to stop with those types of remarks. He should have stopped. <<
If he had reason to believe the other person was serious yes but that is not always the case. Sometimes when a friend says something particularly crude I will complain about my 'virgin ears' and how they can't handle that talk but I don't seriously mean for them to stop and they know it. Just like when I tell them they are offending my delicate sensibilities it is just my playing along. This solider may have thought the same. Heck if my friends had told me someone was offended I probably would have though it was part of the game too unless they somehow made it clear it wasn't.
So add the stress of being shot at and away from family to some poles normal tendencies and it would be easy to misunderstand context.
It would depend on context. If a superior officer gave him an order and he said "suck my c" as a response there would be hell to pay but if it was just back and forth banter it would not be an issue.
I am talking to my uncle on MSN as I read this and he is high ranking military. He has had similar things said to him by lower ranking individuals and he says it is all in context.

sure it is because the radio made it so he was unsure of his audience. It was not the brightest thing he could have done but because he didn't know his audience there was no sexual harassment. How can you sexually harass a woman you don't even know is there?
Another point on this, or two. If a couple of guys are out playing hoop or something, I have no issue with them saying such things. When they are using communications equipment, well, that is a wholly different matter.
It is interesting that I see (not you) excuses for why gays should be excluded, that others being uncomfortable with them is sufficient reason to keep them out, while I also see arguments saying
If that were a private company, and such comments were made over a radio communications system, if it continued with the knowledge of management, there is a potential for a lawsuit, and likely... a loss.
I totally get what you're saying. My DH is the product of an affair so there's definitely some emotional baggage there. :-) I don't think he would ever cheat on me given all the drama in his family due to

Suppose he says that to a superior officer? To someone visiting from Congress?
