That's sad that she was called names at school.

I'm sorry to hear that CF is a part of your family's life, as well as MS. I'm glad to hear that your sister participates in the CF board. It was a lifesaver to me when our dd was joining our family to have an idea what we were in for. We've not done a CF walk yet, but we have done the MS walk.

Cool. Thanks. They just had the CF walk yesterday. It's ironic that since having Briceton my sister has become so FOCUSED. (As I'm sure you understand.) She raised

My dd with CF is 5 (6 in Feb.). She has 2 copies of Delta F508 as well. It's actually good in a way. Since that is the most common mutation, I hold out hope that any type of gene therapy will focus on the most common mutations first. But, I know very little about how gene therapy actually works, so I could be way off. Our dd was diagnosed at birth because she had meconium ileus which also resulted in a perforated bowel. She was in the hospital for her 1st 11 weeks. We weren't involved then as we didn't meet her until 3 weeks before she turned 3 (she is adopted). She is healthy most of the time and runs on all 8 cylinders all the time as well.

Your sister's fundraising efforts are phenomenal. All of us in the CF community owe her a big thanks for those great numbers. WOW! My oldest ds is going to be starting his Eagle Scout project sometime in the next year and is thinking of doing something CF related but has to see what he can come up with and see if it would be approved.

LOL about the licking. My dd sometimes licks herself and says, "Wow Mom, it must be hot today, I'm salty."

Just as an aside, one of my uncles is a doctor in the USA who specializes in CF.

Oh, dear... it's so unfortunate that some students called her names.

And a fine aside, at that, since we've managed a whole subthread, lol. Does he do research or is he a pulmonologist working with patients? Peds or adults? Where? Yes, I'm nosey ;-).

Yes, it is unfortunate, and it brings up the issues that concern me about politics. There are very outspoken parents at my childrens' elementary school who support one candidate. I don't talk politics IRL much except with my family because I don't like the contentious nature of the discussions. I can see the squirms and uncomfortable looks of other kindergarten parents at pick up time when these "loud" ones are talking. They speak as if their candidate is the only one who could possibly be right on every possible issue. They speak badly of the other candidate in no uncertain terms. Those of us who squirm don't necessarily do so because we favor the opposing candidate but because of the way these parents speak. It wouldn't surprise me if these types of discussions around children are the things that result in situations this 12 y/o girl was in. I think, as parents, we need to be careful about what we say around our children and how we say it. I have been very clear with my children about how important our freedom to choose is and that everyone has the right to choose his/her own candidate and that they don't have to agree with us as parents, either. We have encouraged our children to read about the candidates and discover what it is they like/dislike about each but that each is a valid choice. I would hope that would mean they would not be the perpetrators of teasing as in the referenced situation.
