Just a happy little moment :)

Our position on California's No on 8 campaign
9/26/2008 03:23:00 PM
As an Internet company, Google is an active participant in policy debates surrounding information access, technology and energy. Because our company has a great diversity of people and opinions -- Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion, straight and gay -- we do not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues. So when Proposition 8 appeared on the California ballot, it was an unlikely question for Google to take an official company position on.

However, while there are many objections to this proposition -- further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text -- it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 -- we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love.

It astonishes me how often I'm told that someone wants to marry their pet.

I'm extraordinarily fond of my cat, but I don't really think he is who I'd like to be deciding things for me should I become terminally ill, KWIM?

Thank you!

On October 19th I'm lay leading a church service wherein the guest speaker will be a man who is currently co-counsel for Equity California's No on 8 campaign, and was lead counsel on one of the 6 cases the CA Supreme Court used to overturn Prop 22 and legalize gay marriage in CA (and lest anyone think the boards do not matter, I learned about this man from someone else who posts hear and whose husband runs a local Democratic Committee and had him come speak to their group).

I will share what I put in the post as part of the reflection after our silent medication, I'll read from the Supreme Court decision as part of the service and we will sing both Holly Near's "We are a Gentle Angry People" written by Holly Near for the candlelight vigil following the murder of San Francisco's Harvey Milk, and "Standing on the Side of Love"

We are standing on the side of love,

hands joined together while hearts beat as one,

emboldened by faith, we dare to proclaim, we are

standing on the side of love.

Today my husband told me he went to lunch with a friend he works with at our zoo (dh is an electrician there)

"This November California will prove to the nation our leadership in deciding as a state that we will NOT remove the right to marry from same sex couples, that we actually 'get' what rights mean."

You mention removing the "...right to marry from same sex couples...".
