Just a happy little moment :)

Our position on California's No on 8 campaign
9/26/2008 03:23:00 PM
As an Internet company, Google is an active participant in policy debates surrounding information access, technology and energy. Because our company has a great diversity of people and opinions -- Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion, straight and gay -- we do not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues. So when Proposition 8 appeared on the California ballot, it was an unlikely question for Google to take an official company position on.

However, while there are many objections to this proposition -- further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text -- it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 -- we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love.

I don't understand how this is a Christian issue?

What if a religion supported and had in its creed that a woman is not permitted to own any property?

>>We need only look at Massachusetts for a preview of what to expect. There, in 2004, justices of the peace who refused to solemnize same-sex unions due to religious objections were summarily fired.<<

Isn't the job of a justice of the peace to uphold the law, aren't they an officer of the court?

this one always gaulds me. please quote the chapter and verse in which homosexuality is specifically addressed.

because I can show you specifically where the Bible says divorce is adulterous and therefore a sin (Matthew 5:31-32, Mark 10:2-12, Luke 16:18). yet we have no societal problem with divorce. in fact Reagan and McCain were both divorced. heck, McCain committed adultery just like Guiliani and Gingrich - but they are upheld by the right wing of the GOP. so how is it that a sin is specifically outlined but conveniently ignored for those men - but another is never specified and becomes the cornerstone of fear for other men and women?

and if you quote Levitius, then please do not selectively quote: also explain why that one sin is so heinous yet equal weight is not given to sleeping with a menstruating woman (Leviticus 20:18) or a man cutting his hair (Leviticus 19:27)? that's just two of many other abominations most Christians overlook today.

~I noticed that when....~

I'm a mom, and Proposition 8 is a legislative bill (politics) about a civic institution (politics), which will be voted on by citizens of CA (politics), hence my posting this on the "Moms & Politics" board.

A Justice of the Peace is civil servant whose job is to marry couples who obtain a legal marriage lisence. If he/she decides he/she is unable to perform the duties of the job, finding another job is appropriate. If I were to decide I could not teach part of my state required curriculum because it violated my religion I'd be fired too.

As to the rest, he needs to provide an actual case of a church being made to marry a couple it did not wish to marry -- until he can, the argument is merely speculation.

And yes it may mean that same sex families cannot be discrminated against -- what a wonderful thing.

I am sure it was equally challenging for groups who had what they felt were legitimate reasons to discriminate against those who married somone their group found unacceptable to deal with every change that has promoted equal rights for all Americans. That doesn't seem a great reason to deny the right however.

The free practice of religion has always been disallowed when such practice violates the rights of others. Groups whose religion permits polygamy for example, are not able to use this religious right to violate the laws of the US. Neither are those whose religion permits or even requires the use of drugs allowed to violate state and federal laws in order to practice their faith.

Organizations like the YMCA will continue to be allowed to discriminate -- but not able to use federal funds to do so. Just as private organizations like the Boy Scouts can discrminate today.

ITA - when I was a public school teacher, Evolution was part of the state mandated curriculum. Many fundamentalist christians do not believe evolution, but were they a teacher in North Carolina (where I taught) they would still have to teach it.

20-For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seeen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

21-Because, although they knew God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

22-Professing to be wise, they became fools,

23-and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24-Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,

25-Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.
