Sorry, Heather, you are right, that comment was to the original poster, not you. I have a bad habit of just clicking the last poster and hitting reply, sorry again.
And for the other poster that asked- Yes, that is a picture of my house. Alaska is a beautiful place, you should definitely come up and visit at least once!
Thanks, I love my house, even if it is a money pit at times (but what house isn't, right? LOL).
Wasilla is in fine shape. The worst thing that happened is the land dispute which was a horrendous oversight on Palin's part. It was a very sloppy move. However, from what I understand, the sports complex is a nice facility and truth to tell, indoor areas for recreation up here are definitely needed ( I wish North Pole had an ice rink, LOL, but we do have a nice pool attached to our middle school that the public can use during off hours). I have read in the anchorage papers that the city added 1/2 a cent sales tax to pay for the complex and the push to pay off the debt is about 2 years ahead of schedule (should be paid off in the next 2-3 years I believe, it was completed early and under budget- not sure how they managed that, LOL). A couple friends who live down there say that it is nice and the residents are enjoying it.
Wasilla is a thriving community, and up until this year I believe, it was the fastest growing area of the state, making it the third largest "city" although they do use the mat-su valley figures that includes people not specifically inside the city limits. Most of our communities up here are doing really well right now, oil is high, which hurts the family pocket books, but is good for the budgets around the state (I heard Anchorage is getting heated sidewalks.. they really are spoiled down there, they don't even have to plug in their cars, LOL).
Thank you for your insight to Wasilla.
MONTANA MOM !
Well, to be completely honest, I am very interested in trying to keep as many facts straight as I can, but some criticism of Palin is probably correct. Part of the reason she has been effective up here is because she knows Alaska, she's been here her whole life. I don't KNOW how closely she monitors national affairs and that does bother me. I know she's a smart lady and I think she could pick up the needed information, but at the present time she IS playing catch up. Also, there are times when she acts a little too quickly and doesn't look far enough ahead. One example of that is the increased taxes on the oil companies up here. Some of us worry that the severe increase on oil will drive away oil company development which would be catastrophic for the state. Again, this is an issue that I think could be tempered with experience, but she is still very green. However, I also take issue with people belittling her experience up her by writing off Alaska as a sparsely populated state. While that is true, we also have a huge diversity of people, industry, infrastructure, and a vast quantity of land and resources which makes our state quite a bit more complicated than states that have a much higher population.
