I agree you have a right to feel the way you feel. However, I would hope you would have a change of heart.
I have a friend who has had the same SO for 19 years. Her father has refused to meet him. Why? Because he is black. While I agree that her father is well within his right to refuse to meet any of his daughter's lovers, I am forever hoping for his heart to change.
We are trying to get him back to speak to our church in October. I heard from him and he wants to come and speak, just trying to work out the timing (thanks to your dh!!)
Folks do seem to have this rather odd view of democracy, as if it is nothing more than 4th grade class elections, as if there were no balance of powers, as if we had no Constitution. Mine you they always seem to be the folks in the majority who wish to enjoy rights they limit for others. Imagine that ;-)
What?? After Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction??"
I'm sure you would find it nicer if "those people" would go back in the closet. I'm sure many men found it nicer when women stayed home and didn't offer opinions about "men's issues", I'm sure many whites found it nicer when those "uppity" blacks "know their place".
But no one should have to live in a closet because you don't care for the fact they exist.
I think anyone against same sex marriage is insecure. If you simply don't care for it, you'd ignore it. I don't care for folks who marry, get divorced a week later and do that again and again -- but I'd never consider trying to prevent them from getting married, because the concept of civil rights actually has meaning for me. I'm not afraid of folks who are different, not afraid of my kids seeing folks who are different, not afraid of them having the same rights I have.
Take every statement you've made and make the "them" people who are black. That is exactly how many many folks felt during the civil rights movement. But once we move toward equalty, we all get used to "those" folks being part of our lives. Takes being a grown-up though, and not thinking your personal likes and dislikes get to dictate the rights of other people.
>>And I'm sorry but they are not going to get the right to use their partners benefits unless they are in a state that allows gay marriage. Because wouldn't that be unfair to the straight couples who just "live" together? I didn't get to be on my boyfriend's insurance when we lived together, so why should gays get to be on eachothers insurance?<<
The sad thing is you are probably serious. Sigh. IF gay couples can get married they don't need domestic partnership benefits. But in states such as yours, which do not permit them to marry, they cannot. You and your boyfriend could get married if you wanted beneifts. ANd, for the record, many states already have domestic partnership benefits for both gay and straight couples who are not married.

What's you definition of bigot, then? Even bigots have a right to their opinions, but if they spew it on a public debate board,
FTR Janet - I didn't call anyone that.

Thank you Janet and Sue for the support, I was beginning to think I was the only one here who believed in the union of men and women only.
And thank you for the Hallmark phone number, I'll be voicing my opinion to them.
MONTANA MOM !
This I do not believe, as far as I know it has never been proven that people are born that way.
