If you mean the war in Iraq then no I would not support higher taxes for the wealthy. The reason being, I believe the invasion of Iraq was a mistake and has hurt our country. I would not support increased taxes to fund a war that only hurts our country and our image. Taxes should be used to help our country as a whole, not to

Thank you all.
I do think that taxes are something no one enjoys....I don't get all excited when politicians say...we're raising taxes..but only on people who don't need it. I think taxes are a nessecary evil. I do think increases are nessecary....they pay for vital services and public works. Defense spending and paying down war debt are some of those things that need funded too. I don't agree with the war in Iraq..never have. BUT....we have a responsibility to fund it...and pay down the war debt. Social programs are something I support much more...but quite honestly I am a realist. I realize that all government programs need to be funded...regardless of if I agree with them or not. We dont' have a system that allows us to dictate exactly where any of our tax money goes..all we can do is elect people we think will use our money they way we would. I understand what you were getting at...and I think it's a very good question. If taxes were being raised to fund the war..then that is what the money is needed for. I am quite suprised Bush never did....most war time presidents do. It's how wars get paid for among other things. I belive he was the first president to cut taxes during a time war/conflict. I always felt that was not fiscally responsible. NO matter if the cuts benfitted me....or the stimulus check....paying for what we are spending is much more responsible..and our national debt would be lower. Just my 2 cents.
Well typically the 2 issues are decided independently of one another.
I actually would support a tax increase to pay down war debt. And I specifically stated "the war in Iraq" in my post b/c although I don't agree with the war in Iraq, I do believe we need to be in Afghanistan and I would support tax dollars going there. My problem with instituting an increase in taxes specifically to pay for the war in Iraq would be more a matter of principle. I don't think we should be throwing good money after bad. That being said, of course we have to continue to fund our troops even as we slowly pull them out and bring them home/disperse them to areas where they needed more. I just wouldn't support a tax hike, any tax hike, that was specifically for the war in Iraq. Obviously I realize that money is going there no matter what but if I supported increased taxes to

No, I would not support higher taxes to fund that war at all - not by any social class.
~If you believe the wealthy should pay higher taxes, they should pay higher taxes just for the sake of it, not because you think their money is going to a good cause.~
Usually I stay out of the tax discussions because I'm not sure how it works there, but I thought that your wealthy already were paying higher taxes.
To me, the issues are completely separate. My tax money right now is going to fund the war in Iraq. We always depend on our elected representatives to decide where the tax money goes. I doubt there is anyone in the country who agrees 100% with those decisions.
The issue of how much people should be paying in taxes is different. I'm not a huge fan of Obama's tax plan, but I think it's much better than McCain's. As a country, we are spending far more than we are collecting in taxes and that needs to stop. We need to collect more in taxes. Part of that is making those highest income earners pay more. Lower income people simply cant afford an increase, and the bills need to be paid. I dont see that as playing Robin Hood. The programs that the dems want to start (that will increase the need for taxes) benefit society as a whole. Like healthcare for everyone (something most other first world countries have been doing for years). Having health insurance encourages preventative care, and ultimately lowers health care costs. Healthy people are a more productive workforce. Healthy children perform better in school. Providing healthcare ultimately benefits everyone - even those who could afford it on their own.
BTW - Personally, I think our entire tax system needs to be scrapped. I'm in favor of a much more basic graduated tax - everyone pays a percentage of their income - no deductions.
Of course not.
