I'm not trying to be smart, or snarky, or anything like that.

Thru Gore and Kerry, I never even contemplated this concept until today and until this board opened my eyes!

Elissa, I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean by "hypocrisy". Hypocrisy means a pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved attitude. I know that I truly believe what I have said so how is that being hypocritical? Being a hypocrite would mean that I think it's just fine to take your tax dollars to use for something good, but not mine. Wanting taxes to go towards something good rather than something I perceive as bad is not hypocritical.

Here's how I can explain it best. My husband starting smoking again while he was in Iraq. I hate that he smokes and I will not support his habit. However, since I handle the bills, I give him some cash each week (I guess you could say an "allowance") for everyday expenses. Now I realize that sometimes he uses that money to buy cigarettes but I do not actually budget for cigarettes and I would not outright give him money to buy them. I would however, give him the money if he wanted to put it towards a gym membership. Is that being hypocritical? I don't think so. That's just not wanting money to go towards something that is not good for him. What would be hypocritical is if I said he couldn't have money to buy cigarettes but then I went out and bought cigarettes for myself. Does that make sense?

Basically, I think we all want our money to go towards a greater good and that in and of itself does not make us hypocrites.

I would love it if our troops benefited from the incredible debt Bush has racheted up by spending $10 billion/month in Iraq.

Under Bush, all of the tax brackets have gone down considerably.

I would support a tax increase to support the homeless. I would be willing to pay more. What I don't understands how you expect a flat tax rate to help anyone but the rich? You either help "them" or "us" so your darned if you and darned if you
