How does the bailout affect ME?

I am really trying to understand all of this bailout talk. I hear "We have to do it." Then I hear, "We Mustn't do it."

Would someone please explain exactly what this Wall Street bailout means for me? So what happens now that it didn't pass? I would like partisan politics to stay out of it if that is at all possible. Economics was the one class in college that I did not pass. So, keep it simple. I would like to be able to intelligently discuss this with my children.

Are we truly in trouble? Should we take our money out of the bank and hide it? Is it as scary and dire as the media is predicting? Or is it all hype, just another way to help the rich keep their money?

Thanks so much for your help,

There are many reasons.

In the long term it wont.

However, in the short term there are both some good and bad side effects that will more than likely happen. That is we will see the American economy stabilize, so this means our stocks will stop dropping in value. It will also be easier to get a loan.

There are also some likely negative side effects such as high prices for almost all products, especially products created overseas. And a weakened America. That is America will have a greater reliance on foreign powers due to the increased amount of debt.
