Intelligent Design?

Are you concerned about a potential vice president that supports teaching the idea of intelligent design side by side with evolution? I have tried to look into it since hearing that Sarah Palin supports both being taught and I confess I am deeply troubled. Maybe someone could enlighten me but I definitely do not what my children taught that 'intelligent design' as scientific fact. I live in an area where religion is already dangerously encroaching on public education and this bothers me. My religious beliefs are personal and I am tired of people telling me that I should believe what they believe - everyone seems to think their religion is 'the one' without allowing that I may feel the same about mine. Maybe someone can enlighten me - but this idea really concerns me. I know vice presidents don't make policy - but should something happen to McCain this woman would be president.

"A side discussion may have occurred, but it is off topic and a good instructor usually brought it back on main
" also wouldn't have a problem with a teacher opening the discussion, as long as it is started by a student, and discussed as a Christian belief, along with the other theories and beliefs.
Why would
I enjoyed your post Judy.....I agreed with some disagreed with others....but as I said earlier, I tend to agree more with evolution then creationism.
"The first day of class I discuss the limits of science. That religion isn't scientific but that it doesn't mean it isn't valid."
I like this idea...at least you acknowlege that maybe all religion isn't untrue just b/c it isn't science.
That is pretty much how I've always handled this issue, with the exception that I don't use "other beliefs" to describe religious mythology.
Usually if students bring up creationism than the teacher is allowed to discuss it. Usually I just say that we can discuss it after school so as not to disrupt the lesson itself. You are certainly right in that many students are confused between belief and science.
I spend the first week on the scientific method (I teach block scheduling so that is 5-90 minute classes.) throughout the year I emphasize scientific processes and evidence. At the end of the year, last year, I had a student comment that he liked my class because what we learned about genetics "proves" intelligent design. I have no idea where he got that from but I obviously need to figure out something since there was still confusion as to science vs belief and the nature of evidence.
I think most teachers are afraid to discuss creationism and intelligent design because 1) they themselves don't know enough to be able to have a discussion or 2) they are afraid of the emotions that are often attached and 3) may also be afraid of offending parents who then call the administrators.

It is a science degree...however we call it "the art of nursing".
Rose,
sounds like we have similar approaches! Which science do you teach? what age group? Have you had any students challenge you on creationism/ID?
