Intelligent Design?

Are you concerned about a potential vice president that supports teaching the idea of intelligent design side by side with evolution? I have tried to look into it since hearing that Sarah Palin supports both being taught and I confess I am deeply troubled. Maybe someone could enlighten me but I definitely do not what my children taught that 'intelligent design' as scientific fact. I live in an area where religion is already dangerously encroaching on public education and this bothers me. My religious beliefs are personal and I am tired of people telling me that I should believe what they believe - everyone seems to think their religion is 'the one' without allowing that I may feel the same about mine. Maybe someone can enlighten me - but this idea really concerns me. I know vice presidents don't make policy - but should something happen to McCain this woman would be president.

At the present time I'm an 8th grade science teacher, which means I get physical science.

I've never been in a college class that taught anything other then evolution. Maybe it's based on where you live??

I have a question, generally speaking do you find middle school kids more difficult to teach than high school? I ask because I am currently working on my teaching cert and I will be teaching gov't/history/social studies. I have been told by a teacher that it's easier to get hired at a middle school b/c they are harder to teach, hormones kicking in and such was the reason she gave me. I had originally thought I would prefer to teach middle school b/c the kids are younger and maybe more interested than high school kids who are ready to graduate. WDYT?

One of the problems, that I haven't seen addressed in any posts yet, it that the discussion is not always lead by kids inquiries. There are some adults - some in the position of teachers - who have a religious agenda in promoting intelligent design as 'the' way. It has been a topic of debate in school districts in this country and has been included in certain science textbooks as fact. It has not been an issue yet where I live, but even as an adult, and a professional, I have been pressured by a principal of two (I am a public school teacher) to attend their church. I had a vice principle ask me in to her office for a conference only to find out that the conference entailed her wanting to pray for me to be 'reborn as a Christian' because I am Catholic, and therefore in her opinion not a 'true' Christian. I have concerns, not over what students would want to discuss necessarily, but over the agendas of the religious right wing like some of the teachers and administrators I have come into contact with. If a teacher presents creationism as 'fact' when it is not, what is a 'non Christian' child to make of it?

I teach middle school math and I would say that 6th grade is probably the easiest, 7th might be the hardest. Seems 7th graders are really ruled by hormones. 8th grade can be really good or really bad, kids seem to settle a bit more by high school. I love 6th grade and wouldn't trade for anything!

Jen,

thanks! We are absolutely thrilled, especially since we have been TTC for four years. It has been emotionally challenging. Our son is pretty excited too. Although his school anxiety is outweighing everything right now. My next appt isn't til next week and that will be our last u/s for awhile. I don't know how I will handle not being able to see the little bean! The heartbeat is always amazing, but we were not expecting to hear the heartbeat. When the RE turned on the mic we were both amazed. I think my jaw dropped. I didn't think I would get to hear it until 10-12 weeks. The baby was even moving around...

I teach reproduction and embryology in my bio class. It has always been an interesting experience due to my familiarity with reproductive tech. But this will again add another dimension to it. The kids won't know unless I am showing and unable to hide it, which is a possibility as I will be in my fourth/fifth month. Actually that unit always provides another brief discussion of religion vs science. I don't get into abortion for fear of offending anyone. But I always state that science can not determine when life begins, that is left to the realm of religion, we can only tell you when the heart beats, or the nerves allow the fetus to feel etc... Due to my stance most students seem to think that I believe whatever it is that they believe. LOL.

I know the feeling well - it took 4 years for us to have our son.
