Intelligent Design?

Are you concerned about a potential vice president that supports teaching the idea of intelligent design side by side with evolution? I have tried to look into it since hearing that Sarah Palin supports both being taught and I confess I am deeply troubled. Maybe someone could enlighten me but I definitely do not what my children taught that 'intelligent design' as scientific fact. I live in an area where religion is already dangerously encroaching on public education and this bothers me. My religious beliefs are personal and I am tired of people telling me that I should believe what they believe - everyone seems to think their religion is 'the one' without allowing that I may feel the same about mine. Maybe someone can enlighten me - but this idea really concerns me. I know vice presidents don't make policy - but should something happen to McCain this woman would be president.

Due to my stance most students seem to think that I believe whatever it is that they believe. LOL

I hear you on that.

Thanks for the info. I can't believe your principal called you in to talk to you about your salvation, that is very unprofessional IMO. I would have been so taken back.

Also as far as teachers bringing up the subject, I think it certain communities it would be okay with the parents b/c there are lots of schools that are almost all Christian. I live in Oklahoma City and a few years ago a large high school had a person from a church passing out Bibles and nobody was upset about it. A friend of mine who had kids there complained and the administration just couldn't understand why it bothered her, it was unreal.

I am going to be obsrving in a school this semester, I will find out soon if it's a middle or high. Here we have middle 6-8 and high 9-12. Hopefully I will have the chance to do whatever I don't do this time next semester.

I already have degrees in Political Science so am getting my teaching cert through an alternative placement program so only have to take 12 college credits of education classes. If all goes well I should be able to start looking for positions next school year.

That concept that because its OK with the majority of parents, it should be Ok is really disturbing to me (and I know you didn't take that position).

See that is my problem - if you are in the minority as far as religious beliefs you are pretty much stuck. If you speak out you fear reprisal - I know I did and I am Catholic - arguably the original Christian religion. If the material is presented by an adult many students would be afraid to argue and then are being taught religion rather than science. I just think religion should not be in school - if you want religion in school send your child to private school. I did attend Catholic school for most of my education but chose to have my children in public school. There are so many diverse religious views, many of which I don't agree with, that I would never want to see it taught in school. How could you address all views? In this area we have Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses - very different from mainstream Christianity - as well as Muslim, Jewish, and Buddhist to name a few, Southern Baptist seems to be the majority however. Where would the line be drawn?

If you are in a science class and write a religious paper on creationism you should get an F, sorry, but you cannot back it up with scientific evidence, scientific theories are more than guesses. If you are in a science class, write about science, if you are in a religion class write about religion.
