But, lets not have government funded facilities, lets have these be publicly funded facilities. I'll put my money in that

Think back to the start of mental health facilites. They were awful and more like torture chambers then mental health facilites. They were funded by churches (and indiviual groups) when they started because people didn't believe in mental illness. I do not , for a minute, believe that all of these goverment funded

I'm pretty new to this board as well. But, I think you are more than welcome to post here. That is how you get established on a board. And for someone to bring up how new you are to a board as an insult or a way to rebuttle, I think that is just low. You are entitled to say your opinion on the subject. Don't go away.

I think you are referring to mental hospitals that were opened in the early 1900's. And I am pretty sure that we have figured out since then that it is a real medical condition. I don't know, but I think so.

Also, the watermelon comment was because that is all congress has accomplished. If you read my entire post in its entirty. Congress established August National Watermelon month. I have absolutely no idea what you mean by "racially insensitive" that is just obserd. How is eating a watermelon racist?? And I am so sick of people saying that just because a person doesn't agree with Obama or even democrats that that person is racist. You don't know me, you don't know my family. I have a WIDE variaty of races and colors in my family. I am not a racist nor "racially insensitive". Just so you know. I really hope that is not what your were saying, but just in case I hope that clears it up for you.

I never said to put the mentally ill in prison. I was talking about those who are on the streets using drugs and drunk on the streets. That IS against the law just so you know. Public intoxication. And, SOME, not all, are on the streets because they are addicted to drugs and alcohol and maybe if we find them and put them in jail, some judges sentence them to rehab. I don't know about you, but I think that is what a person needs if they are addicted to drugs or alcohol. It is much better than seeing them just wither away and die on the streets from the illness of addiction.

Anyway, I hope I cleared that up for you. Just so you know, I am not heartless, nor racist, I just agreed that they could have done more than just give the homeless bus tokens and movie tickets. But, if they were only concerned about the image a homeless American would have made at the DNC, than I guess they did the right thing.

You are still missing a big point. WHY are so many addicted to alcohol and drugs? A large number of the homeless are mentally ill and addicted to drugs/alcohol due to serving in the military and experiencing post traumatic stress syndrome. See I have seen you post numerous times about how pro-war and pro-military you are but what about taking care of these soldiers when they come home and cannot reaclimate to life? (I'm not really asking what YOU are doing personally but just in general :) )

You can't take care of people who don't want to be taken care of.
