Thought this was interesting. From the Vietnam Vets against John McCain:
Navy pilot John Sidney McCain III should have never been allowed to graduate from the U.S. Navy flight school.

Yes, We Can!
I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure
"but i smell those same guys that dumped on Kerry. on the other side this time. even as a dem, I'm not willing to comment on that. no matter what, he was a POW and he took the risks."
ITA it was wrong when John Kerry was swiftboated, and this is wrong and irrelevant. Do we really care that he was a bad pilot? I think he has a long enough record of responsibility in the senate not to worry about what he did 50 years ago.
The issue of what has he run is fair game, but how good/bad of a pilot he was, or whether he partied when in his 20s... I dont care.
If the dems dont manage to stay on message, we're going to lose. Attacking the military career of someone who spent 5 years as a POW is not going to get anyone anywhere.
And I still haven't gotten my question answered.
OK, I don't usually join these debates, but I can tell you want an answer to your question of "what did he lead?"

Pilots are not in charge of the ship at all. Ensign are NOT given the responsibility of the whole ship but portions of the ship. Just like 1st and 2nd LT are given small groups (maybe ten to fifteen) to be in charge of. Those who graduate from academies are given nothing more or less then any other officer. The only way they are better then OSC and ROTC officers is there own view of themselves. The best training in the military is through action and experience which one does not learn in a school. My husband is a prior service officer who just got promoted BZ
As I said, I don't know the specifics of McCain's military career.

Actually, its not just that he was wild and crazy before he went to Vietnam (even though he was married), he was still a partier when he came home.
