From the time my kids were very young, I read to them. I read all kinds of books to them from traditional children's books like "Peter Pan" and "The Wizard of Oz" to classics like "The Call of the Wild" and "Les Miserables." We read "The Bicentennial Man," "R.U.R." and "The Hundred Secret Senses." I even read large parts of the Bible to them. But one thing I adamantly refused to do was read any kind of "Happy Princess" story to them. I told them, I hope you can find someone to love and who will love you and truly, truly cherish you. But you need to make yourself happy and successful. If it works out with someone that's wonderful, but you ought never wait for someone else to take care of you or make you happy. Part of the problem is that the philosopher was right when he said, "A great many people think they're thinking, when really they're just rearranging their prejudices." To a great extent, we tell people that the right way to live their lives is to go out and get married right away. We're telling them to get married before they even understand who they are, what they want to be, where they want to end up, what they want out of life. It's no wonder so many marriages end in divorce.

I didn't get married until I was 25, had a nursing job (marketable resource) and lived in my own apartment controling my own finances, etc.

While I don't think women should be naive, and they SHOULD be prepared in case something should happen, I also don't believe we should just assume that a marriage is going to end, either.

My husband is the major bread-winner in the family.

I agree with you 100%. My husband is in the military and it's VERY difficult to get your foot in the door of most companies(they can tell your military spouse by your resume)
