Letters to the First Lady...
| Fri, 12-19-2008 - 9:37am |
When the Obamas enter the White House, they’ll face an unprecedented number of daunting issues, not the least of them energy independence and fixing the economy. Michelle has said that while her first priority will be to act as "Mom-in-Chief," she also cares deeply about military families, work-life issues and education. Although her role as first lady is yet to be defined, it's a safe bet that Michelle will continue to be a source of counsel and support for Barack, as she has in the past. If you could write an email to the future first lady as she prepares for her new role, what would you say to her?

I'd wish her the best and hope that she has a very tough skin.
I would request free long distance and 1 free flight per family a year in the military to visit back home. I bet that would raise the enlistments! :)
I did want to add that I was on a conference call with Michelle Obama because I am a member of Blue Star Families for Obama. She seemed like a breath of fresh air! :)

I know, it was so frustrating to have to pay for that "luxury". Phone cards were also frustrating b/c AT&T is the contracted phone provider and they wouldn't accept any other company's phone cards so if we sent, or people donated phone cards, they were pretty much useless if they weren't AT&T cards.

This is probably out of the First Lady's scope, but as far as military families are concerned, I would like a FREEZE on all foreclosure procedures involving families with military members who
ITA that they should NOT have to pay for a cup of coffee. Sadly though...that's been going on since WWII ( at least). THe Red Cross used to charge on the front
About the paid internet and holds on loan payments for deployed soldiers ideas...
I think the reason the internet is important and why it should be paid for is b/c it definitely provides a measure of support for soldiers and helps maintain better mental health while deployed. The pros that are attained by allowing soldiers to have internet access more than outweigh the cost involved. I guess what bothers me is that there is so much wasteful military spending and yet soldiers have to pay for this "luxury" out of their own pocket.
And although I didn't bring up the issue of putting loan payments on hold, I'll address that as well. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA)
