maybe OT- who can be a racist?

I'm posting this here because this board seems to have a lot of activity, and I think there are quite a few smart folks on this board.

I was recently involved in a online discussion about race. Specifically, it went along these lines: Only white people can be "racists". Several black (or african american -- I'm going to use black because it's easier to type and most black people I know don't care if I say black -- I'm not trying to be insensitive), have informed me that ONLY white people can be racists. People of other races canNOT be racists.

Now, I don't understand this. It seems to me that anyone who denigrates another human being, based on their heritage/skin color, can be "racist".

Further, I asked about people who are of mixed race. I was told that if they identified more with their "white part", then they COULD be racist, but if they identified more with their "black part" then they couldn't be. (In that argument, it was more about whites and blacks, not other heritages.)

What do you think? Can ONLY white people be racists? If I am "mixed", and I identify more with my "white half", can I still be racist? I thought it was an interesting discussion, but I was called "the worst kind of racist", since I maintained my position that ANYONE could be a racist. Your thoughts?

I agree.

If it matters, I was debating some older gentlemen who had lived through the Civil Rights Movement in the South. I was born in the early 70s, so I don't remember any of that. I informed them that most people my age, (and younger), aren't really as concerned about race as some of the older generation. I acknowledged their right to still harbor resentment, I'm sure I would too, BUT, that when I've discussed race with my peers and younger, it doesn't seem to matter what race a person is to them.

Of course there are extremists of all ages, races, and sexes, but for the most part, the "average" person I know couldn't care less what color someone is.

I got slammed and called a bunch of names because I refused to believe "only white people" could be racist. It really made me wonder if a large portion of the population believe that.

As far as I know, these people I was "talking" to are not members of the New Black Panther party. They are just ordinary people, who happen to believe only white people can be/are racists.

Honestly, it truly disturbed me. I was told I didn't have any right to say ANYthing, since I am white and I didn't acknowledge that the scars of slavery still exist. (I said nothing of the kind, BTW, I just reiterated my point that I believed racism was not limited to white people.)

I was also born in the 70's, so probably have a similar experience to you. I do think race is a complicate and contentious issue, that is very hard to discuss without upsetting people.

Yes, I was born in the 70's too and agree completely with your statement.

According to the people I was discussing this with, they didn't "have to be tolerant", since they had suffered at the hands of white people... that things still weren't equal, because only 4 of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies were black. I made the point that only 15 were women... I was accused of "perpetuating racism".
