Obama raps McCain for ignorance of his own houses
WASHINGTON - John McCain may have created his own housing crisis.
Hours after a report that the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting didn't know how many homes he and his multimillionaire wife own, Democratic rival Barack Obama launched a national TV ad and a series of campaign stops aimed at portraying McCain as wealthy and out of touch.
With the economy the top issue in the race, Obama sought to turn McCain's gaffe into one of those symbolic moments that stick in voters' minds

I am sure McCain truly gets the plight of the working class?? Let's see he wears $500.00 shoes and has so many houses he doesn't know who many. Yep, he gets the average mans struggle.
Don't you think both of these men are rich?
Obama just bought a million dollar mansion and vacationed in Hawaii (not knocking his vacation but it's more expensive than most vacations)
Just for the Record.. McCain owns 8 houses and I don't fault he or Obama for being Rich.. I don't have Class envy but for some odd reason the Democrats seem to loathe anyone that does have money.
John McCain's family owns at least eight properties — not the seven Democrats are alleging or the four McCain's staff identified — according to a Politico analysis of property and tax records, as well as interviews.
The presumptive Republican nominee, though, may have some wiggle room in explaining why he couldn't immediately provide an answer when asked by Politico how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own. Sen. McCain himself does not own any of the properties. They're all owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control.

I think you're making some terribly big assumptions here. First of all McCain is a lot older than Obama and it would make sense that he has a diversified pool of assets. My husband and I have accumulated a number of rental properties over the years and have a vacation home as well. We are well off I'd say but not necessarily rich--not IMO anyway!
Being as I do the managing of the properties for the most part I asked my DH just yesterday if he'd been asked that same question off the cuff what would his answer be? He said, "Umm, I'm not sure, maybe 9?" I laughed. We have 12.
Perhaps it's just that Mr.McCain is so busy serving the public he pays someone else to manage his personal affairs. I would hardly say it's indicative of elitism.
Heck--we probably know better than the average person how others live being landlords of a number of properties over a long period of time.

You honestly think someone with a Senator's schedule has time to manage his personal investments and you find it odd that he might have assistants or advisers to do that for him? Can you not imagine his schedule?
You are more than welcome to denigrate the service of Senator McCain. He's given his entire adult life in the service of his country but you can view that as elitism rather than give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure he'd be the first to defend your right to do so. I just find it in poor taste to do so. Maybe because I too have a very full schedule with many things to juggle I chose to view his answer as quite understandable.
delphine88: Heck--we probably know better than the average person how others live being landlords of a number of properties over a long period of time.
katieandzachsmom: I'd have to take your word for that because we don't own any properties above our home and my child care business.
I appreciate that. I'm sure that you know a lot more about running a child care business than I could expect to know--except you likely do know plenty about how other people live just by virtue of having a child care business. You really don't think a man who spent many years in the military and then in public office interacting with all kinds of people knows how others live? The man has been all over the world--he likely knows far better than either us how other people live.
Hey everyone I am a new lurker finally speaking up. I am Laura, sahm to 3 boys. I have a BA and MA in Poli Sci and am currently taking classes to obtain my teaching cert.
McCain not knowing how many houses he owns IS part of a big issue. The vast majority of our population would not hesitate to answer this question, it just proves how rich McCain is. I'm not saying that Obama isn't wealthy as well, but
I'm sorry but I don't see any "dirt" on Obama being discussed.
