I agree completely. Personally I am afraid of what will happen to our salary and healthcare under McCain's plan. We are comfortable, but still middle class. Even though our salary makes us "comfortable" our budget is a struggle. We recently had to pay 22,000 for fertility treatments because they were not covered. We have small house that we can actually afford, which makes it possible to pay our bills.
for several years I was out of work, going back to school, and relying on my husband's salary as a self-employed contractor. We were denied private insurance, at any cost, due to minor health issues dating atleast two-three years prior to our application. If we were denied than who, beyond healthy 20-somethings would get insurance? We ended up going through a business bureau in our local township, our insurance for a healthy family of three was $900 per month! absolutely insane.
Under McCain, those who don't have insurance won't be able to get it because they will be denied (the poor statistically have the worst health.) and they won't be able to afford it since McCain won't supplement it enough. PLUS people like me, working hard, middle class with a tight budget will be penalized for having decent work-provided health care.
Even if Obama gets riid of the Bush family tax rebates, I will pay more in taxes due to my increased healthcare expenses. Keep the 1200/year rebate for my family of 3. I want my non-taxable healthcare benefits.
(ps... i won't be very active in the conversation as my teaching job and pg leaves me with very little energy during the week.)

OMgosh! I could say the exact same thing substituting the name McCain for Obama!
>>Even though our salary makes us "comfortable" our budget is a struggle. We recently had to pay 22,000 for fertility treatments because they were not covered.<<
Both choices you chose to make. Neither life threatening.
We have small house that we can actually afford, which makes it possible to pay our bills.
>>We ended up going through a business bureau in our local township, our insurance for a healthy family of three was $900 per month! absolutely insane.<<
Another Choice! What I find interesting is that you think that's "insane" for you as an individual but where's the outcry at an employer having to foot that bill? Do you realize that it's the consumer who ultimately bears the burden anyway?>
>>Under McCain, those who don't have insurance won't be able to get it because they will be denied (the poor statistically have the worst health.)<<
They don't need insurance. We the taxpayers are already paying their bills.
>>Even if Obama gets riid of the Bush family tax rebates, I will pay more in taxes due to my increased healthcare expenses.<<
Dang! What a concept. Those with higher costs should pay more.

This was just a temporary
I must say that these issues and the typical conservative responses always shock me. I will never understand this sense of "me, me,me" the idea that everyone is ONLY responsible for themselves, the lack of compassion towards other people and their individual situations. It seems to me to be in complete conflict to the "conservative christian values" that we hear so much about.
If this is inflammatory than fine. Because the selfishness and narrow-mindedness is inflammatory to me. I could go into my reasons and justifications but I doubt that it is anything new to people who hold this "value." I'm so ticked off that I am going to end my part of this conversation and work on what is really important... educating my students and helping them to learn important values such as real compassion, helping other people even if they are different from you.

Your statements are not true.
I'm a conservative no doubt and while not a Christian, I do understand agree almost completely with their viewpoint.
In most cases the most definitely believe in personal responsibility and being charitable. That being said they recognize that being charitable is a PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Using someone else to force it upon others isn't in their playbook. That's not being charitable. That's abuse of power.
Perhaps you might want to add some teaching about the United States Constitution to that teaching lesson for your students so that they may grow up knowledgeable.
P.S. You also may benefit from pondering the statistics which say liberal democrats are among the most wealthy of the population but christian republicans by far give more to charity and participate more frequently in volunteer work than democrats across all income levels. Sounds like that Christian teaching in the end produces some pretty charitable and responsible folks who are that way BY CHOICE.

You know I'd love to learn when you decided that spending $22,000 on fertility treatment so long as there were starving children in the world, put you on some moral high ground. In fact let me quote you while you ponder:
>>I must say that these issues and the typical conservative responses always shock me. I will never understand this sense of "me, me,me" the idea that everyone is ONLY responsible for themselves, the lack of compassion towards other people and their individual situations. So yes I agree that selfishness and narrow-mindedness is inflammatory. So is the thought that my earnings can be legally stolen and used to pay for things I deem trivial-- when I could have used them to pay for things I value more.
Where we differ is I think you should get to spend your money on your fertility if you so value it more than spending it on starving children. I give that same consideration to people of all income levels. I demand that their earnings be taken simply because they can be. I trust those who earn their money to decide how it is best spent. I don't think that makes me morally inferior in the least.
<<>>
See? But that's just it!! Democratic plans don't demand that everyone look out for each other. They only demand that people who have more look out for people who have less. So, it's just a flip of the "me, me, me" idea...it's just a different group saying, "Me! Me! Me!" Then who is looking out for the people who have more? No one! That's why the people who have more end up getting very protective of themselves.
